UN International Day Of Persons With Disabilities
Shadow Minister of Health Kim Wilson is reminding the island that tomorrow [Dec 3] is United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities, saying “everyone deserves the right to education, equality, employment and accessibility.”
The Shadow Minister said, “Since 1992, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been celebrated annually on December 3rd.
“It is time Bermuda fell in line with our international counterparts to become a more inclusive community for persons with disabilities.
“In 2011, the Progressive Labour Party introduced the Human Rights [Unreasonable Hardship] Amendment Act to encourage employers to hire persons with disabilities.
“It is all too easy to overlook the difficulties faced by those who we perceive to be different to us, but everyone deserves the right to education, equality, employment and accessibility. We must leave no one behind and fight for the rights of all.
“We, as a community, must do more with the groundwork that has been laid down by legislation. It is imperative that we improve travel accessibility for persons with disabilities. Advancement of any culture requires a sustainable development approach that includes everyone.”
