Video: Police Confirm Shooting On Front Street

May 16, 2018

[Updated] The Bermuda Police Service is holding a press conference this afternoon [May 16] where they are expected to address the shooting that took place at Docksider on Front Street this morning.

The management of Docksider has already confirmed that an incident took place at the bar shortly after midnight saying that it “seems the individuals being targeted were in close proximity to Docksider and ran into Docksider to seek refuge therefore our business was affected.”

“Docksider is cooperating fully with the BPS in this matter,” they added, saying they “are thankful no one was injured” and “hope the perpetrator will be brought to justice and dealt with accordingly.”

We will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video replay of the press conference is below.

Update 4.14pm: Detective Chief Inspector Na’imah Astwood, Serious Crime Department said, “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that around 1:10am today [Wednesday, May 16th] a firearm incident occurred outside The Docksider Pub and Restaurant, Front Street, City of Hamilton.

“An investigation regarding the circumstances is currently underway. The Serious Crime Unit is heading up inquiries, with Detective Sergeant Jason Smith and Detective Sergeant Dean Martin leading the investigative team regarding this confirmed firearm incident.

“There were no injuries reported and detectives are working with community partners to progress this investigation.

“It is very early in the investigation and we are not ruling out any possibilities, including that this incident may be gang related

“It is disappointing, as the last confirmed discharge of a firearm was 3rd November 2017 – over 6 months ago.

“As a result of this development, members of the general public can expect high visibility policing patrols and should not be surprised if stop and search powers are used.

“Detectives are appealing for witnesses, as well as any individuals who were at the establishment when the incident occurred – or persons with relevant photos/video footage, to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Smith on 717-0864, 247-1739 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 at the earliest opportunity.”

Update 8.48pm: Minister of National Security Wayne Caines said, “Bermuda has enjoyed a relatively peaceful period for six months, with no gun violence since November 3, 2017. Therefore this matter is particularly disheartening.

“The Gang Violence Reduction Team is actively engaged with community stakeholders, implementing an holistic strategy to eventually eradicate gang violence and all related behaviours. The Bermuda Police Service are actively investigating this matter. Reducing and ultimately ending gun violence is an ongoing challenge and we will continue to focus our time, resources and attention to this effort.

“We do not want our safe spaces – such as social clubs, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other public spaces – put in jeopardy; we want Bermuda to be a safe place to live and have fun, for residents and visitors alike.

“If anyone has any information that could lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this morning’s most unfortunate incident, we implore you to please notify the authorities and call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.”

Two blocks from the islands main police station. Shameful. I heard they only have one sometimes two squad cars servicing out of Hamilton Station. If this is true shame on the Top Cop, Governor and Government. They should donate cars to the main station.

    • puzzled says:

      Well you ill informed.
Only so many people work a shift and most of them are out dealing with accidents and incidents et al outside of Hamilton.

    • jt says:

I thought it was God and social psychologists we have lined up to solve this, not law enforcement

      • shrew says:

you win the internet today! that was great. : )

      • Mrs Brady says:

Yes, thoughts and prayers should sort it out.

  2. facts of the rock says:

LIFE with no parole, but I’d prefer a good old fashioned hanging!

  3. nerema says:

It’s ok. Pastor Bean and Burt have a ‘Bermuda-centric’ approach which will stop all this crime and violence any minute now.

  4. Deadhead says:

Instead of Caine’s racking up the airmiles on my dime,Let’s have anotherpeace day please actually let’s have a peace weekend.

  5. Mrs Brady says:

Not surprised. Thugs are out in town late at night. Every night. Soon it will be the new normal as Bermuda heads for the. 3rd world.

    • Onion Juice says:

Name one place in this world were you dont find stuff like this happening.
      Tic Toc
I guess the whole world is 3rd world.

      • Question says:

Certain people think it’s normal behaviour.

      • The Church says:

The shootings only flourished under the PLP

      • Mrs Brady says:

No but Bermuda is heading for the 3rd world. Instead of being flippant and making 3rd grade comments, this is a real threat to Bermuda. The good times are done. This is the new normal. Tic Tic all you like.

      • Toodle-oo says:

You keep repeating the same BS so you’re obviously way too young to remember when Bermuda did not have any of this cr@p . People like you still like to tell people that we’re crime free to make it sound like we’re special but in your eyes it’s ok because it exists everywhere else too . (Incidentally there are plenty of places that you can go for a crime free experience and even leave the house unlocked and guess what they have in common ?)

      • jt says:

I’d say most cities with Bermuda’s population find this type of thing fairly uncommon. Saying “oh well it happens everywhere” is not only untrue but it adds to the problem.

      • nerema says:

Little villages of 60,000 don’t have this kind of crap all the time.

    • mixitup says:

Who are these ‘Thugs’ Mrs Brady? Describe them for me so I can keep a look out.

My assumption is that you are no fan of this Govt – dude you’re life must be bleak and getting worse – 1 year in and most likely 9 years min to follow ..

      • shrew says:

yes and you should be miserable too because if history is anything to go by with the PLP, Bermuda will be another 800 million in debt and the only people with jobs will be Hayward’s union. just wait for the next fiscal report. then hopefully your eyes will be WOKE!

      • Anbu says:

Must have felt the same way for the last 5 years then huh?

  7. Athena says:

Obviously time to bring back “old fashioned policing” with officers patrolling the streets of the city, especially evening and early morning hours.

Methinks the jet setting Gov’t minister gave a ‘pink slip’ to Operation Street Safe in error!

  8. Um no says:

“The Gang Violence Reduction Team is actively engaged with community stakeholders, implementing an holistic strategy to eventually eradicate gang violence and all related behaviours
