Court: Taxi Driver Banned For 18 Months

July 11, 2018

A taxi-driver has been banned from driving for 18 months after being caught behind the wheel while twice the legal limit.

Cornell Bailey was observed swerving from one side of the road to the other on Middle Road in Warwick on the afternoon of June 13 by police officers in a private car.

Bailey, 57, initially did not notice the police were trying to pull him over but eventually stopped in the car park of Henry VIII.

As he was questioned about his driving police noticed that he was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and there were two empty bottles of Super T in his vehicle.

Bailey of St George’s told police he had had “one or two to drink”.

At Magistrates’ Court this morning Bailey pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit.

He asked the court not to impose a driving ban as he was his family’s sole bread winner.

However Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo explained that the law did not provide the court with any discretion on that basis and imposed an 18 month driving ban as well as a $1200 fine.
