Bermuda Mourns Passing Of Glenn Blakeney Jr
The island and cricketing world are mourning the passing of fabled cricketer Glenn Blakeney Jr, who passed away at only 45-years-old following a battle with cancer.
A star of mythical proportion on the field, he reached great heights in his chosen sport, representing Bermuda internationally, St. George’s at the annual Cup Match Classic, as well as Bailey’s Bay, and he is the only cricketer to have scored a triple century in domestic 50 overs cricket.
While he was an excellent cricket player, his main love was his family; with Mr Blakeney always serving as a dedicated father to his children.
The PLP extended their condolences saying, “The Progressive Labour Party would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Smith and Blakeney families on the passing of Glenn Smith Blakeney.
“Glenn was a renowned cricketer of immense talent and commitment. He represented Bermuda both internationally and locally during his career. He was a dedicated member of Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club and St. George’s Cup Match team for many years. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the cricketing community.
“To his wife Twynika and their three children, to former Minister Glenn Blakeney and wife Gwen, to his mother Karen, his siblings and his many family and friends , we send our heartfelt condolences. Our hearts go out to you all during this most difficult time.”
President of the Bermuda Cricket Board Lloyd Smith stated, “The BCB extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Glenn Blakeney Jr.
“Glenn was blessed with an incredible natural talent that allowed him to entertain local and overseas fans with exceptional stroke-play.
“He represented Bermuda many times, playing at First Class, ODI and other international level as a top order batsman who could also keep wicket and bowl leg-spin.
“He is the only cricketer to have scored a triple century in domestic 50 overs cricket, a fitting highlight to a career in which he dominated local bowlers with consummate ease.”
His father Glenn Blakeney Sr said, “Heartfelt thanks to everyone for the tremendous outpouring of love expressed for our beloved Glenn. I am humbled as his father to know how much you respected, appreciated and admired an amazing talent and a truly decent human being!
“Our entire family sincerely appreciates the kind sentiments and wonderful memories that reflects Glenn’s contribution to the sport of cricket as a gentleman and genuine role model in the many heartwarming ways so many of you have graciously shared.”
