Youth Photography Competition For Ages 7-18

October 25, 2019

The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] and Mrs. Joy Grundy are inviting local students to participate in the Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition, launching on Monday, October 28.

A spokesperson said, “The competition is an opportunity for the next generation of photographers to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment in memory of Dr. Grundy.

“Open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7-18, the competition asks students to photograph a theme of interest: Bermuda Life, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Wildlife/Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.

“Dr. Reg Grundy, AC OBE [1923-2016] remains one of the key figures in the history of international television production and distribution and he is celebrated for being the pioneer of local television production on a global scale. Though Dr. Grundy’s life was dedicated to television, wildlife photography became his passionate avocation.

“As an Australian-Bermudian, Grundy cherished his island home and was enchanted by the Bermuda Longtail for the last 35 years of his life. He spent long hours photographing Longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park, from his boat in Castle Harbour or up at St. David’s Battery, with camera raised, peering out to sea.

“His enthusiasm for wildlife photography took him to every continent, searching for the ‘right shot’ with his wife, Joy [née Chambers], the well-known author, at his side.”

When asked about the competition, Mrs. Grundy said, “It brings to life one of my husband Reg’s dreams. He had envisioned this for years and now at last it is real. Reg was happiest out in a boat on Castle Harbour, camera in hand, looking skywards to capture the endless orbits of his favourite bird, the Longtail.

“Yet he did not photograph the Longtail exclusively; he took photographs of everything which interested him. Reg believed, as I do, that a photographic competition for school children would encourage them to observe and investigate the wonder and beauty of Bermuda, helping them learn patience and enabling them to appreciate our island home and the people around us.”

The spokesperson said, “Students must submit photos to the National Museum via their website under the following age groups: 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18. Entries can be any/all themes [Bermuda life, Bermuda buildings or Bermuda wildlife/nature], but only one photograph per theme will be accepted.

“Shooting using a smart phone or digital camera, students should submit a minimum file size of 1MB with a maximum file size of 50 MB. The format should be JPEG and the resolution a minimum of 300 dpi. Honouring Dr. Grundy’s signature style, all images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image editing software or digital enhancements.

“Local judges are Antoine Hunt, photographer and artist; Dr. Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator; and Chinni Mahadevan, Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator.

“Winning entries will be displayed at Commissioner’s House, NMB and published in MARITimes, NMB’s biannual magazine, as well as the on the Museum’s and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites.

“Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, gift certificates at Phoenix Stores, and the ‘Best in Show’ will win a Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR camera with 18-55mm and 55-300mm Canon Lens and a tripod. In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.”

NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said, “We are excited to be partnering with Mrs. Grundy and have the generous support of Clarien Bank, AF Smith, Phoenix Stores and in-kind printing by Bermuda Blue Printing for this competition. The judges look forward to seeing the submissions – we know it will be a tough choice to pick the winning entries.”

The spokesperson said, “The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 15, 2019 with a prize giving ceremony at Commissioner’s House on Thursday, December 5, 2019. Submissions must be made online only.”
