Police Aware Of & Will Attend Planned Car Rally

April 29, 2021

The police said they are aware of a post circulating inviting people to attend a car rally on Sunday [May 2] to “to protest government’s Covid vaccine initiative,” and said that they will attend to “ensure a smooth flow of traffic, that all safety guidelines are being observed and there are no breaches of any laws or regulations.”

A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service, [BPS] is aware of a post circulating on social media message, inviting members of the community to attend a peaceful car rally starting from the Flag Pole on Front Street at 12:00 noon, on Sunday 2nd May, this coming Sunday, to protest government’s Covid vaccine initiative.”

Martin Weekes, Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, stated: “The BPS supports peaceful protest and we have been in contact with the organisers, to discuss with them adherence to the current Covid regulations as they pertain to gatherings.

“Officers will be in attendance on Sunday to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, that all safety guidelines are being observed and there are no breaches of any laws or regulations as required of us, in keeping with our mandate to keep Bermuda safe, particularly during these unprecedented times.”

The flyer circulating bills the event as a “Bermuda Freedom Car Rally” with a graphic showing a red circle with a syringe crossed out, with words “My Body My Choice.”

  1. Unbelievable says:

This rally is dumb. What do you think happens if you want to visit some countries in South America or in Africa? You have to get a vaccine. And who’s making you get a vaccine? It’s your home country so that you don’t bring back any diseases.

I’m pretty sure some of you lot do a good bit of damage to your bodies with alcohol. How dumb can you be?

    • Wow says:

Dumb is being injected with a non FDA approved liquid.

      • Sandgrownan says:

You haven’t done one iota of research on vaccines, this vaccine, how it’s produced, it’s success rate… nothing.

You’ve read somewhere on a fwd fwd fwd email from someone’s sisters aunt who works in the shop near a Doctors office that it was developed too quickly.

        • Face the Facts says:

          Here are the facts.
          1. None
Of the vaccines are FDA approved. They simply are EUA (Emergency Ise Approval) that’s concerning in and of itself.
          2. The survival rate for healthy people under 60 with no underlying medical issues mirrors exactly an aggressive seasonal flu 99.97% why would inject yourself with anything?
          3. The big pharmaceutical companies lobbied for and achieved through congress in the 1990’s complete legal immunity and cannot be sued for any wrongful deaths as a result of their vaccines. Not much reporting on this is there?
Enough here to plant the seed of doubt for
Any reasonable person. Those are the facts.

      • Spotty says:

Umm hey Skillah -which vaccines you thinking we have that aint been ‘proved by the FDA or in the case of the UK the MHRA…well i pity your ignorant paranoid and conspiratorial mind. May you have a blessed day and stay indoors!

      • aceboy says:

Dumb is protesting a vaccine and then wanting government to protect you by shutting the island down. I have no problem with you not wanting to take it, but we need to open the island up fully. So that is your choice, live with it but don’t expect me to stay home anymore to protect you.

      • Green Eyes says:

        Agreed thank you @wow

  2. Great Idea says:

Peaceful protest is the hallmark of any free, democratic society.
This is an excellent idea for peoples voices to be heard and to exercise their rights.
I will definitely attend and I support this rally.

  3. Southampton says:

Are these people absolutely crazy. What is wrong with these idiots.
The government is trying to help the people of Bermuda.
    Grow up people.

  4. Amazing says:

Your body your choice, how very true, but you won’t be happy when the whole world precludes you from travel. Welcome to Bermuda, forever.

    • Unbelievable says:

It’s immature is what it is too. Some of these lot need to retake their lessons in civics and history again.

    • Facts says:

Not true about travel at all. Way too much CNN my friend.
The EU’s Covid passport being floated and soon to be enacted is:
You can enter and travel freely throughout the EU if:
      1. You had a vaccine
      Or
      2. You have recently recovered from Covid ( I.e. natural immunity)
      Or
      3. You have a recent negative test
Now that’s reasonable and sensible and gives people choices vaccinated or not.

      • sandgrownan says:

Don’t watch cable news for obvious reasons…however, there is a lot of legislative action being considered for those who won’t heed warnings.

        1. The Morrison government is exploring the extraordinary option of making it a criminal offence for Australians to return home from Covid hotspots overseas. (The Guardian)
        2. BRUSSELS — American tourists who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to visit the European Union over the summer, the head of the bloc’s executive body said in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday, more than a year after shutting down nonessential travel from most countries to limit the spread of the coronavirus. (NY Times)
        3. Key to the EU’s digital certificate is a QR code – a machine-readable graphic code made up of black and white squares – that contains personal data and the EU’s Commission says it will be safe and secure. It is working with the World Health Organization to ensure the certificate is recognised beyond Europe.

The 27 member states also want to include non-EU countries such as Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, with officials saying earlier this week that vaccinated travellers from the US may also be able to visit Europe this summer. (BBC)
        4. Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s minister for national development and co-chair of the country’s Covid-19 task force, said last week that vaccinated travelers may have their “stay-at-home” quarantine periods shortened or eliminated altogether.

        5. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce kicked off an international debate when he referred to vaccinations as a “necessity” for the airline’s international travelers last November, during an interview with Australia’s Nine News.

“Talking to my colleagues in other airlines around the globe, I think it’s going to be a common theme across the board,” he said.

On Dec. 3, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian told Today that he thinks vaccinations for international travel will eventually become a “requirement.”

And on and on and on….essentially, go get vaccinated, don’t be stupid, and we can all move on.

  5. bike says:

stupid. its your body and your choice. i haven’t heard govt say getting vaccine is or will be mandatory so waste your time but when it comes to restricted travel suck it up buttercup. stay out of my area

    • puzzled says:

      Idiot.
Also Weeks needs to damper his political statements.

    • Mark says:

And you please stay out of mine. Don’t want to catch your stupidness.

  6. Confused says:

When did it change? What I heard had nothing to do with the vaccine. But to protest leadership and ask for change!at the top ?

Also to ensure both vaccinated and non vaccinated enjoy the same quarantine protocol?

    • Sandgrownan says:

Why? Why should the idiots refusing to get vaccinated be treated the same?

It’s utterly preposterous. I would legislate the vaccine with fines for those that refuse. It worked in 1858. It can work now.

Other than clean water and basic hygiene, mass vaccination programs are the biggest public health success story. Ever. End of. Why the F can’t you over privileged snowflakes just get vaccinated so we can all move on.

      • Confused says:

If the world news are correct several vaccinated individuals that have caught the virus have passed as a consequence despite being vaccinated.
Further more no one knows if at any given time a variant can attack those of us vaccinated in a more aggressive way than those that are not . Vaccinated people can and do have the ability to fall ill to the virus and infect others with 5 new variants in India alone many more in Brazil and the California and New York that are just being investigated would it not make more sense to quarantine everyone regardless of vaccinated status for a minimum of 14 days just to prevent disaster and allow the population of Bermuda to continue life with eased restrictions. Keep in mind that a good number of the population that suffer from low blood pressure and various types of conditions might have had past illness that prevents them from taking the jab . Further more travelers infected with the variant Breton will test negative
On any test other than blood test normally done after it’s to late!

        • Sandgrownan says:

That’s actually factually incorrect. You are actually part of the problem in prolonging this mess.

      • Mark says:

Cause the virus will still be around so by the logic he’s got universal power forever. When you get your booster make sure they include a dose of rationality. Mind you, then you also would probably revolt.

  7. Itsnowonder says:

Stupid is as stupid does. What exactly are you protesting because no one is forcing you to take the Vac. Like you said… it’s a personal choice so why protest. Just don’t take it.

    • Brewdog says:

Thank you for asking. We are coming to this with many different concerns including but not limited to economic recovery, patients’ rights (having at least one visitor to liaise on their behalf), coercion, the quarantine structure…

      • Smile says:

If we get enough people vaccinated….
Economic recovery will happen quickly!! Creation of Bermudian jobs and particularly in sectors hardest hit by Covid.
Vaccines are the path to restoring hospital visitation rights
Vaccines at the pathway to saying goodbye to needing to quarantine

Make sure the Car Rally heads up to the Walk In vaccine clinic and get your jabs. Your collective action will help you get closer to what you are rallying for!!!

Please take action. We all want our way of life to improve and need you to be brave and to do your part to help the community get there.

        • Sandgrownan says:

          Well said

        • sandgrownan says:

Interestingly, the US economy is growing on the back of increase vaccination rates. But Bermudians are just so spashal.

    • Absolutely says:

Thank you – you took the words right out of my mouth!! Bunch of idiots!

  8. SM says:

Selfish Morons, that would be the protestors.

  9. charts says:

It’s a bit distressing to know so many of our countryfolk don’t believe in modern medicine.
And those of them who do get sick and hospitalized… We will have to subsidize.

  10. Brewdog says:

The poster is one of several depicting the concerns to be addressed on Sunday….stay tuned.

  11. Ahhh says:

I feel like I’m living amongst the softest most sensitive generation of people to ever walk this earth. If you dont want it, dont take it. Keep it moving.

    • Unbelievable says:

@Ahhh….yes thank you. Add gullible too. They’ll fall for any old Facebook post. Why have a rally to prove nothing. No one is even forcing you to take the vaccine in the first place. Entitled and nothing else better to do.

      • Wrong says:

They most certainly are endeavoring to “force you” to take the vaccine.
Unvaccinated people must, at their own expense, quarantine in a government approved facility for 14 days after returning to BDA after June 6th. That is economic bullying.
Vaccinated people can spread the virus as can unvaccinated people. Bold face discrimination and bullying. I will proudly be at the rally.

        • Spotty says:

Hey Wrong A very appropriate name…talk about bullyin..recall last year around this time when those of us wanting or needing to come back here were locked up for at least 14 days (never let out of the room). There was no choice there-absolutely maddening. You ask around. Point here chief is that now would-be visitors to Bermy have a choice, then we didn’t, get the jabs or if you still fell you must come..go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollahs.

Science and medicine cant guarantee anything, but ignorance does (ps not a good thing )!!

        • Unbelievable says:

If you were to take stock of some of your daily activities, I bet you’d realise you are forced to a lot of things. This however is not about someone’s freedoms or rights. This is about a GLOBAL HEALTH CRISIS and that everyone has a part to play. But you go ahead and just worry about yourself and attend a rally that won’t achieve anything at all. Sooner or later, you will have to get the vaccine.

        • sandgrownan says:

You’re an idiot then. I would, not only quarantine the un-vaccinated, I would fine those that refuse to take it.

Here’s the deal (sigh – again):

Clinical trials show that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has a very high efficacy — 95 percent — against symptomatic infection.

Real-world studies show a similar high effectiveness against all infections, including asymptomatic ones.

So, very few people fully vaccinated with this vaccine will contract the coronavirus. However, breakthrough infections can occur. This is true of all vaccines.

“No vaccine is 100 percent effective for every recipient, so we will continue to see rare infections in people who have been vaccinated,” said Dr. S. Wesley Long, an associate professor of pathology and genomic medicine at Houston Methodist, who was not involved in the new study.

“But many times these infections are mild, and the protection against severe disease and hospitalization is still very robust,” he said.

In the new study, researchers at Tel Aviv University analyzed PCR samples collected from nearly 400 people who developed a coronavirus infection after receiving one or both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Researchers compared these PCR samples with samples taken from a similar group of unvaccinated people.

They looked at whether vaccinated people were more likely to contract an infection with one of the coronavirus variants, compared with the original coronavirus.”

        • Green Eyes says:

          @Wrong thank you

        • Really says:

Don’t worry the USA will be doing the same very soon. No vaccine no enter buttercup!!!

  12. Cedar Heel bye says:

Nobody is being forced into “economic bullying”. As long as you never travel you will not have to stay 14 days in a quarantine facility at your own expense.

  13. Time Shall Tell says:

A good chance to put faces to this tin foil hat cult that think the world is always out to get them. The last time I checked the vaccine was a “personal choice” & not a scenario of a team of government agents banging down people’s doors to hold them down forcing them to take the vaccine. A bunch of Facebook & Youtube researchers who feel themselves to be “woke” trying to claim to be more educated then the specialists in their given fields. These same “woke” individuals are now trying to force their gullibility onto others in the spread of false information.

  14. Common Sense says:

The Government of the day in the 1970s mandated the wearing of crash helmets when riding a motorcycle. There were some silly complaints that the law was against human rights. AS we know simple common sense won out. Crash helmets reduce the risk of death or serious brain injury in the case of RTAs.
The vaccine has been proved to almost remove the risk of serious illness when people contract the virus and almost eliminate the risk of passing the virus to others; all at an extremely low cost in adverse effects. These are the facts. The naiveity of those who dispute this baffles me. It’s all about benefits versus risks. Wear your crash helmet and get vaccinated!

  15. Noel Ashford says:

It’s such a challenge to not laugh at this island some days…

  16. sandgrownan says:

Interesting. Reading in the Guardian, UK is considering mass chickenpox vaccination program.

I bet Bermudians are too spashal to get that either.
