Weather Service Issue Tropical Storm Watch

August 15, 2021

[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service and U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami are “monitoring a small area of low pressure centered approximately 200nm north northeast of Bermuda for signs of possible tropical development.”

The BWS posted the photo below on social media, saying: “BWS and NHC are monitoring a small area of low pressure centered approximately 200nm north northeast of Bermuda for signs of possible tropical development.

“Regardless of any development, this system will continue to stream showers and thunderstorms over the area today and into the early part of the work week. More details about the disturbance may also be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov. Stay up to date with local conditions at www.weather.bm.”

Update 8pm: The BWS said, “6PM Update – Sunday 15 August 2021: We continue to closely monitor a small area of low pressure to the northeast of the island. Over the past several hours, the low has become better organized as it drifts towards the south.

“NHC now indicates a 70% chance of tropical development of this system in the next few days. Regardless of development, the low will keep inclement weather nearby and increase local winds to moderate to strong from tomorrow; a Small Craft Warning has been issued for Monday and Tuesday.

“It is probable that this system will be upgraded tonight, and a Tropical Storm Watch may be issued. Please continue following our updates at www.weather.bm. Additional details from the NHC can be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Update 11.23pm: A Government spokesperson said, “The US National Hurricane Center will be classifying the small disturbance to Bermuda’s northeast as a Tropical Depression at midnight.

“The Depression will continue to drift southward, moving east of Bermuda tonight and then turn close to the south of the island over the next 48 hours.

“Accordingly, BWS will issue a Tropical Storm Watch at the 11:30PM forecast tonight, to be consistent with the first NHC advisory and Tropical Update Bulletin, scheduled for 12 midnight. More detail (track forecast, intensity, etc.) will follow at that time.

“Expect inclement weather with heavy downpours possible in fringing rainbands if they move across the island. Local winds may increase to 20 knots from tomorrow, especially in the southern Marine Area as this system passes nearby to the south. Visit weather.bm for updates.”

Update 11.30pm: The BWS has just issued a Tropical Storm Watch. Their forecast states, “A nearby low has developed into a Tropical Depression and as it continues to meander nearby, slowly circling the Marine area from our east through south it may intensify. Thus, a tropical storm watch has been issued. Expect occasional inclement weather with heavy downpours possible in fringe rain bands should they move across the Island.”
