BUEI Kids Hour To Feature Basking Shark
The Basking Shark, the second largest living shark, is the focus for The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] ‘Kids Hour Saturdays’ on February 18.
A spokesperson said, “‘Kids Hours Saturdays’ takes place every third Saturday of the month at 11am and 2pm respectively. Each hour features the screening of short films followed by a book reading for children aged 5-12 years.
“The two short films ‘Jonathan Bird’s Blue World: Basking Sharks and Lampreys’ and ‘WILDLIFE: A Tale of Gentle Giants’ will be followed by a reading of ‘Basking Sharks’, a book by Laura Hamilton Waxman’.
“The first film, ‘Blue World: Basking Sharks and Lampreys’, showcases the symbiotic relationship between Basking Sharks and Lampreys in the Bay of Fundy, first discovered by Jonathan Bird in 1998.
“The second film, ‘WILDLIFE: A Tale of Gentle Giants’, is set in the waters of the Atlantic coast of the northeastern United States and highlights the interesting relationship between the basking shark, the world’s second-largest fish, and the leatherback sea turtles, the world’s largest reptile.
“The story, ‘Basking Sharks’ by Laura Hamilton Waxman, explains everything one needs to know about the basking shark. This photo-illustrated book explains how basking sharks use gill-rakers to feed on zooplankton and the work being done to protect this species of huge but gentle sharks. The Q&A features throughout promote reader inquiry and critical thinking.”
“Symbiotic relationships can help individual species to evolve and even thrive. Without these naturally occurring symbiotic relationships, the health of our reefs and oceans would suffer,” said a BUEI spokesperson. “During this Saturday’s Kids Hour, we expect all to be inspired by the world’s second-largest fish and how they interact harmoniously with other marine life.”
The spokesperson said, “‘Kids Hour Saturdays’ are free for members [Single Parent through Adventurer Tier] and all care givers, and $4 per child for non-members. Please note, caregivers must stay on site for the hour. Admission to the Ocean Discovery Centre at BUEI is also included.
“Mark your calendars for BUEI’s upcoming Kids Hour Saturdays on Saturday March 18th when the focus is on Dolphins!
“Space is limited and advance registration is encouraged. To register for BUEI’s Kids Hour Saturdays, please call the Oceans Gift Shop on 294-0204.”
