358 Traffic Tickets Issued In February 2023

March 1, 2023

“During the month of February 2023, 358 traffic tickets were issued, down from 490 in the previous reporting period,” the police said today.

Acting Superintendent Robert Cardwell, Tactical Operations Division said, “For the month of February 2023, recorded traffic infractions were down in all categories when compared to January 2023. The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] continues to progress Operation Vega under the ethos of calming the roads and making the roads safer, while holding those who commit traffic offences accountable.

“Injuries in both fatal and serious injury collisions are consistently attributable to head injury. As part of the investigation into these matters, we are specifically looking at helmets, to determine if improper use or sub-standard helmets are contributing to these injuries. We encourage all to inspect your helmets. If they are damaged in any way, it is imperative that they are replaced.

“The BPS continues to receive reports from members of the public who have suffered a bad driving experience. This includes careless overtaking, such as overtaking on the inside, being cut off and cycles encroaching to the opposite side of the road. We encourage all to reflect on their own driving behaviour and ensure that you are not adding to the problem.

“Instances of impaired driving continues to be of concern. 27 people were arrested for this offence in February with 11 of those in an advertised road side sobriety testing weekend.

“This compares to 14 motorists that were arrested in January. If you drink – do not drive, the life you save might be your own.”

“105 parking tickets were also issued, down from 240 in the previous reporting period.

“For the first two months of this year [January & February 2023], 41 impaired drivers were arrested. That compares to 23 for the same period in 2022.

  1. Question says:

Almost every single day when I’m in traffic, there’s a person behind in a car on the phone sending messages. How they can only issue 3 tickets in a month is beyond me.

When are they going to do something about the 1diots driving electric scooters on the sidewalk up and down Front Street? They’ll wait until someone’s killed and then pretend to do their job.

    • Toodle-oo says:

You’re lucky that those people are behind you .
I cant count how many times a day I have water trucks and cement trucks coming towards me in the opposite lane with the driver looking down playing with their stupid phones .
There’s absolutely NO good reason that anyone needs to play with their phone while driving .

      • Question says:

The trouble is when they’re behind you in traffic, it’s your car they’re most likely to hit.
If the police only stopped 3 people in a month for this, they must be actively ignoring it. Another law not being enforced.

        • Toodle-oo says:

Yeah , it’s kinda 6 of one and half a dozen of the other .

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

In Bermuda we are seldom more the 5 or 10 minutes from our next stop.

Whatever you want to do on the phone can wait.

Your multitasking skills are not that good. Driving needs 100% of your attention. You are not on some desolate road in Utah.

  3. Contretemps023 says:

Was issued a ticket for not putting my foot down at a stop sign, after making the same observation as the driver only five feet in front of me that there was no oncoming traffic. The individual was not issued a ticket having opted to stop for an oncoming vehicle before proceeding. Essentially applying their basic survival instincts.

I have taken this road to and from work every day since, and not a day has gone by without seeing individuals do this. Granted from an observational perspective just about everyone who I have seen has eased up to the stop sign likely as a way to take note of oncoming traffic and respond accordingly.

Somehow this kind of decision making is only permissible when a person of authority allows it or a generous motorist. An example being that four cars are waiting to enter the main road and someone of authority or not stops to let them through. In this circumstance any intent of stopping at the sign is foregone by most if not all of those that were let through.

    • PBanks says:

That particular junction is seen as low-hanging fruit. Would rather have them stationed at ‘frequent accident spots’ as well as areas like roundabouts just to dissuade the more dangerous behaviour of some of our road users.

  4. Goof says:

8923 tickets issued? So is it really working? My main question is just how many fines are actually being paid?Havent seen any magistrates court news of late they used to report on everything. More to the point I am deeply concerned with the no insurance, un licensed,un fit vehicles, and use of handheld devices are extremely dangerous
