Crew Member Dies, Ship Diverts To Bermuda

On Monday [April 24], a Singapore flagged oil/chemical tanker diverted to Bermuda after a 62-year-old crew member died.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Monday 24th April, 6:00 pm – Satellite telephone call received from the Captain of the Singapore flagged oil/chemical tanker Rudolph Schulte at a position 130 miles north of Bermuda.

“The 177 meter long ship with 20 crew was conducting engine repairs when the 2nd rngineer suddenly collapsed unconscious in the engine room. The ship’s crew administered CPR with oxygen support but despite their best efforts and a conference call between the ship, Rescue Coordination Centre [RCC] Bermuda and a US Coast Guard flight surgeon at RCC Norfolk it was concluded that the crewman was deceased.

“Following consultation with the ship’s company, the ship’s Master elected to divert to Bermuda to land the body of the 62-year-old Latvian national for repatriation.

“The ship arrived at Five Fathom Hole at 0800 hours on April 25th and the body was transferred to a waiting pilot boat whereupon the ship resumed her voyage from Houston, Texas to Amsterdam, Netherlands.”
