Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin Golf Tournament
The Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin Golf Tournament was held recently as part of Black Golfers Week.
A spokesperson said, “As a result of tremendous demand for participation in the events of the Bermuda Celebrity Golf Week – The Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin Golf Tournament was oversubscribed.
“We staged a separate afternoon tournament with fabulous prizes and hospitality for disappointed by the huge turnout for the morning event. In addition, we added a special after event for the best prizes on offer.
“Port Royal Golf Course, Bermuda Tourism Authority, Bella Vista and Eventive Sports are to be thanked for staging the Louis Kid Corbin tournament but especially appreciate the golfers in the afternoon for enduring the weather but still having an awesome time golfing.
“We were pleased that Mayor of St. George, The Worshipful George Dowling III represented the family of Louis Corbin. Ironically Louis Corbin’s father was a member of the Corporation of St. George’s and received a young Queen Elizabeth II in the town square.
“Louis ‘Kid’ Corbin was a trailblazer golfer who defied the racist laws of segregation by integrating several major professional events in North America, most notably, he competed in the Canadian Open on two occasions [recording a 5 under par 67 in one] before his death in 1951.
“Great prizes were donated to the golfers in the afternoon event.
