Duffy Encourages Athletes To Race In Iron Kids
Dame Flora Duffy has encouraged the island’s youngsters to follow in her footsteps and compete in the Clarien Iron Kids Triathlon on Saturday, June 17.
The 33rd annual event, hosted by Clarien Bank in partnership with the Bermuda Triathlon Association, is open to boys and girls aged 3 to 15.
The Iron Kids race was Duffy’s first-ever triathlon as a seven-year-old.
“I want to encourage you all to enter,” Duffy said in a video posted on Instagram. “This was actually my first triathlon many, many years ago.
“I absolutely loved it; I had so much fun, and the rest is history.
“If you’re looking to get involved in triathlon, I’d encourage you to do this race.”
The race began in 1988 as a Gibbons Company event held at Shelly Bay Beach in Hamilton Parish. It was later organised by Capital G Bank, now Clarien Bank, and is now held at Clearwater Beach in St David’s.
Professional triathletes Tyler Smith and Erica Hawley are also former Iron Kids participants.
For boys and girls aged 11 to 15, the race will feature a 200-metre swim, five-mile bike and one-mile run.
For those aged 7 to 10, there will be a 100-metre swim, 2.5-mile bike and 0-5-mile run.
There will also be a Tiny Tots race for 3 to 6-year-olds, featuring a 10-metre swim, 250-bike and 50-metre run.
All participants must be aged 3 to 15 on December 31, 2023. Children turning 7 or 11 before December 31 will be required to register in the next age group category.
