Photos & Video: Celebrating Special Olympians

July 18, 2023

Bermuda’s Special Olympians – who recently won 11 medals at the World Games in Berlin, Germany — traveled via a motorcade to the Cabinet Grounds today [July 18] where they received certificates in recognition of their achievement.

Speaking at the event today, Premier David Burt said, “Good afternoon Ministers, Distinguished guests, athletes, coaches, family, supporters, and members of the media, and welcome to the Cabinet Office grounds.

“It is with great pride and appreciation that we gather here to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our athletes who have returned triumphant from the Special Olympic Games held last month in Berlin.

“Winning 2 gold, 1 silver and 8 bronze, bringing a total of 11 medals back home. The Special Olympic Games are not only a testament to athletic prowess but also a celebration of diversity and inclusion. They remind us that every individual has a unique contribution to make and that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to shine.

“In Bermuda, we firmly believe in fostering an inclusive society where every citizen can thrive, regardless of their abilities. In Berlin, our Special Olympians proved that their abilities transcend any limitations. They have shown us the true meaning of courage, determination, and the power of a positive spirit. They have exemplified the values of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and fair play and have been and will continue to be remarkable ambassadors for our island.

“Their achievements have not only brought honour to Bermuda but have inspired people throughout our island. I have even received emails from persons who had the pleasure of meeting these extraordinary young women and men on their travels and felt compelled to contact me directly to tell me how proud Bermuda should be of them and how well they represented our island. And I could not agree with them more.

“To our remarkable athletes, you have made us proud. You have inspired all of us to aim higher. And you have shown us that there are no limitations on what can be achieved with skill, incredible courage and support.

“To all the coaches, parents, and supporters who stood alongside our Special Olympians last months and no doubt in the months and years prior in which they were preparing, we extend our deepest gratitude. Behind each athlete, there is a network of love, guidance, unwavering belief and encouragement, which has been instrumental in shaping their journeys and empowering them to reach for the stars.

“As we celebrate our Special Olympians today, we thank them for giving us another reason to be proud to be Bermudian, and today we also recognise the power and beauty of inclusivity. Congratulations to each and every one of you. May this reception be a joyous occasion filled with laughter and smiles as we officially welcome you home. Thank you.”
