July 1 – August 7: 683 Traffic Tickets Issued

“During 1st July – 7th August 2023, 683 traffic tickets were issued by the BPS, up from 330 issued during June 2023,” the police said, adding that “since the start of Operation Vega [6th July 2021], a total of 10,635 traffic tickets have been issued.”

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, Tactical Operations Division, said, “Operation Vega has been in effect for over two years now and reducing harm on the island’s roads is our ongoing focus. However, all road users have a crucial role to play in achieving that aim.

“In addition to appropriate traffic enforcement, the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] continues to partner with relevant stakeholders on road safety education and modernising penalties for traffic offences.”

Statistics

A police spokesperson said, “From 1st January until 7th August 2023, 162 motorists were arrested for impaired driving – 14 in January, 27 in February, 25 in March, 21 in April, 30 in May, 23 in June, 19 in July and 3 from 1st – 7th August. In comparison, for the same period in 2022, a total of 145 motorists were arrested for impaired driving.

“During 1st July – 7th August 2023, 683 traffic tickets were issued by the BPS, up from 330 issued during June 2023. In addition, 91 motorist advice notices [official written warnings] were issued from 1st July – 7th August 2023, up from 48 in June. Parking tickets issued from 1st July – 7th August 2023 totalled 369, up from 275 parking tickets issued in June.

“Since the start of Operation Vega [6th July 2021], a total of 10,635 traffic tickets have been issued. The breakdown of ticketed traffic offences for 1st July – 7th August 2023 is below. The change compared to June 2023 is provided in brackets.

    Is the formal legislation now in place to enable Bermuda to actually collect on these tickets or is there still the loophole that meant that the fines weren’t collectable… if you knew about the loophole that is.

    One only can imagine where one was going at 95 kph / 60mph i hope they were taken off the road for at least a year.

      It should be a shock but I see at least one person every day doing those numbers on just an 8 mile round trip. Today I saw two and they could hardly stay on their side of the road what with the bends and trenches .
