‘Alarming Rise In Vaping Among Young People’

October 5, 2023

“The alarming rise in vaping among young people and the associated risks is a concerning public health issue,” warned Minister of Health, Kim Wilson.

“We have noticed how accessible e-cigarettes and similar devices are in our community and are warning parents and guardians that vaping is unsafe and has a detrimental impact on young people’s health and well-being.”

A government spokesperson said, “Once considered a safer alternative to traditional smoking, vaping has emerged as a significant public health concern, particularly for adolescents and teenagers. The enticing flavours, sleek devices, and misleading marketing tactics have contributed to its popularity.

“Recent studies have shown that vaping poses many risks to adolescents and teenagers. The nicotine content in many vaping products can lead to addiction, particularly during the crucial period of brain development. Vaping has also served as a gateway to traditional cigarette smoking.

Minister Wilson said, “By fostering open conversations with young people, promoting peer support programs, and implementing stricter regulations on vaping products, we can collectively safeguard our youth’s well-being and ensure a healthier future.

The government spokesperson said, “For more information on the risks of e-cigarettes for kids, teens, and young adults visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site.

“The Ministry of Health is reminding the public that only registered pharmacies can sell e-cigarettes, nicotine vapes, and liquid nicotine. Businesses that are not registered pharmacies must stop the sale of these products immediately. Failure to comply may lead to prosecution.

“The list of registered pharmacies can be found here: www.gov.bm/pharmacy.”
