International Day Of The Girl Event On Oct 15th
The island’s girls have been invited to celebrate the International Day of the Girl on Sunday [Oct 15] from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Bermuda National Sports Centre.
A spokesperson said, “Each October 11th, the United Nations recognises the International Day of the Girl Child to observe the unique challenges that girls face globally. Specifically, challenges surrounding equal access to education, autonomy to decide their futures away from forced marriages and sexual violence, and equal opportunities to make decisions, and more.
“This year, the theme is Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership & Well-Being. We only have to look at the recent women’s protest and public disobedience against the morality police in Iran to see that girls and women are still not treated as equals in many places globally.
“In Bermuda, we mark the day with a free girls only event targeted at 4-13-year-old girls, where they can try lots of sports like boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, volleyball, rugby, fencing, and STEM activities. We want to encourage girls to give activities that may be new to them a go while also learning about inspiring women, such as the three 2023 Nobel Laureates including Narges Mohammadi who won the Peace Prize for fighting female oppression.
“We hope to see 150-200 girls over the afternoon from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the National Sports Centre’s north field.”
