Marco Warren was recognised posthumously for his football accomplishments at the 42nd Annual Sports Awards after being named the recipient of the Minister’s Award, with his family accepting the award on his behalf.
Warren forged a reputation as a creative midfielder for the Bermuda national team and Premier Division powerhouse PHC Zebras. He was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Hamilton Parish in May last year aged 29.
His father, Dwight Warren, addressed the audience in the Harbourview Ballroom at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club on Saturday [March 9].
“I’m not much one for words, but on behalf of my family, and of course, if Marco were present, he would have expressed his gratitude to the sports committee and to all those who have selected him to be the recipient of this award,” he said.
“It’s an emotional time for our family as we continue to deal with the process of his loss.
“One thing I’ve realised about our beloved Marco is that light shines brighter in darkness, and he was that little light.
“I just want to say thank you on behalf of my family for this award.”
Warren captained PHC to the Premier Division and Friendship Trophy titles last season, earning the top-flight’s Most Valuable Player award for the successive year at the Bermuda Football Association Awards Ceremony.
He made his Bermuda debut in a 2-0 victory over Grenada in a friendly match at home in 2015 and was part of the first Bermuda squad to reach the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2019, starting their final group match, a 2-0 win over Nicaragua at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.
