Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors Tinee Furbert joined a dynamic session at Bermuda College for the Office of Youth Affairs’ Zone In event on Wednesday [Nov 13] where she listened to thoughtful insights and innovative ideas from Bermuda College students.

“It was truly inspiring to hear these young voices speaking so openly and bravely about the issues they face,” Minister Furbert shared. “Their perspectives remind us why youth-focused initiatives are vital. This generation is ready to lead, and it’s our job to support them by creating spaces where they feel heard and empowered to make a difference.”

A Government spokesperson said, “These young individuals expressed a strong interest in expanding opportunities and amplifying the voice of Bermuda’s youth, courageously discussing the issues and challenges they face daily. Minister Furbert was energized by the students’ enthusiasm and commitment to positive change, emphasizing the importance of listening to their ideas and perspectives.

“The session also saw a visit from the new Bermuda College President, Dr. David Sam, who extended a warm welcome and expressed encouragement for continued dialogue between the Ministry and Bermuda College students. Minister Furbert expressed her eagerness to continue this engagement, noting that the Office of Youth Affairs is committed to addressing the core goals of the National Youth Policy.

“During the discussion, Minister Furbert outlined the Ministry’s support for youth, which includes diverse development programs in education, mentorship, and skill-building. By collaborating with schools, community organizations, and NGOs, the Ministry seeks to meet young people’s needs, whether in academics, mental health resources, or personal growth opportunities.

“The establishment of the Office of Youth Affairs plays a key role in coordinating these initiatives. This office centralizes youth services, tailors programs to address immediate youth concerns, and reinforces child safeguarding measures to ensure every young person in Bermuda feels safe and supported. Reflecting this commitment, the Ministry has also increased the budget for youth-focused initiatives to expand programs, improve facilities, and launch new opportunities.

“The National Youth Policy, which was discussed at the session, is designed to foster inclusion, leadership, and holistic development for Bermuda’s young people. The policy empowers youth to actively participate in their communities, develop leadership skills, and find avenues for personal and professional growth.

“It reinforces the Ministry’s goal to help every young person in Bermuda thrive. Today’s session marks a vital step in strengthening the relationship between the Ministry and Bermuda’s youth, and Minister Furbert looks forward to more opportunities to engage young people in discussions on shaping Bermuda’s future.”
