Brain Injury Awareness Month recognizes resilience, featuring Bermudian David Goonewardene’s journey to recovery, with an open house at Evolution Healing Centre on March 21.

March marks Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the challenges faced by those affected by traumatic brain injuries [TBI], this year’s theme “My Brain Injury Journey,” aims to recognize the strength of individuals and communities in overcoming adversity. With another such story of resilience is that of David Goonewardene, a young Bermudian who has defied the odds on his journey from a severe brain injury to a promising future.

In March 2021, David’s life took an unexpected and devastating turn when he was involved in a serious car accident on Knapton Hill Road in Smith’s Parish. At just 16 years old, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma, fighting for his life. His road to recovery was uncertain, but through sheer determination and the unwavering support of his family, friends, and medical professionals, David began the arduous journey of rehabilitation.

David’s recovery would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of dedicated professionals who guided him through his rehabilitation. Their expertise and care played an instrumental role in helping him regain mobility, strength, and independence. David’s progress has been nothing short of inspiring. By May 2022, he achieved a significant milestone—participating in the 35th Annual Convex Bermuda End-to-End event. Walking from Warwick Academy to Dockyard alongside his classmates was not just a physical accomplishment but a powerful statement of resilience and determination.

Determined to re-engage with professional and academic opportunities, David took on a summer internship at Clarien Bank in the Personal Banking department in 2024. His adaptability, enthusiasm, and positive contributions earned him recognition among his colleagues, proving his ability to thrive in a structured work environment.

Today, David continues to build his future, and with the support of Adam and Nick Hines, and mentorship of Steve Potter, he is pursuing an apprenticeship with H&H Plumbing and Mechanical. This opportunity has allowed him to gain hands-on experience and further develop skills in a supportive workplace, reinforcing the importance of providing career pathways for young individuals recovering from serious injuries.

David’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and community support. His story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of access to medical care, rehabilitation services, and opportunities for reintegration into society.

Brain injuries can happen to anyone, at any time, and the road to recovery is often long and uncertain. However, with the right support network, access to rehabilitation, and inclusive opportunities in education and employment, survivors can rebuild their lives and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

As Brain Injury Awareness Month reminds us, stories like David’s underscore the need for continued advocacy, improved rehabilitation resources, and a compassionate approach to supporting those affected. His remarkable progress is not just a personal victory—it’s a shining example of what is possible when resilience meets community care.
