People Urged To Join Voter Rights Association
Bermuda Youth Connect and Bermuda is Love are encouraging “anyone interested in electoral reform to join the Voter Rights Association.”
A joint statement from Bermuda Youth Connect and Bermuda is Love said, “The Voter Rights Association was created in 2007 by Stuart Hayward and Geoff Parker, Sr. ‘to provide a voice and a vehicle within the political process for voters to participate more fully in the policy decisions that affect their collective lives.’
“At the current moment in time, Bermudians are keen on electoral reform and the modernisation of current electoral practices. The timing of the General Election 2025 has disappointed many Bermudians, particularly students abroad pursuing higher education.
“A letter sent to all candidates highlighting all the articles the VRA would like to be included in a Voters Bill of Rights is on the VRA Facebook page. Amongst them is the right to Absentee Ballots and the right to have fixed-date elections!
“In light of this, Bermuda Youth Connect and Bermuda is Love encourage anyone interested in electoral reform to join the Voter Rights Association as it proposes Bermuda’s first Voters Bill of Rights. To join the Voter Rights Association, email votersrightsassociation@gmail.com.
“As a reminder to the public, Voter Rights Bills and Acts have been a turning point for democratic expansion and enfranchisement. In the United States, the Voters Rights Act of 1965 was landmark legislation which prohibited racial discrimination in voting.”

How about “no taxation without representation?”
If you pay taxes in Bermuda (or anywhere) you should have a vote in how your money is being spent.
“If you pay taxes in Bermuda (or anywhere) you should have a vote in how your money is being spent.”
We haven’t had that vote in over 20 yeas. Successive PLP governments have lied to the people about where our money is going and how much of our money is being spent.
Bermuda’s youth should not forget what the PLP did this year. By tactically switching off the student vote (anyone else note the smart kids are not voting for Burt??), they cut young people’s rights and muted their voice. It was blatant and outrageous, the PLP should be embarrassed, and this must never happen again.
Until 1968 there was no free vote in Bermuda, you had to be a property owner and blacks often had no vote.
So how shameful that the party that campaigned on equal rights should some 55 years later force through their very own apartheid based on who might and might not vote for them.
“Until 1968 there was no free vote in Bermuda, you had to be a property owner ”
That is not correct. There was no property requirement to vote in the 1963 election.
