28 College Students To Travel To Europe

Twenty-eight Bermuda College students will soon travel to Europe on a UK Government-sponsored trip to live and work across three different countries.

A spokesperson said, “Under the Turing Scheme, education providers can apply for funding to support students with study and work placements around the world.

“It is the first time that the scheme has been awarded outside the UK and means the students will travel, work and live in Belgium, Italy, and Cyprus, for free for 24 days.”

Lyndon Jackson, the Interim Director of the Counselling and Career Centre, said the institution had been working on the idea for two years.

“For some, it will be the first time in their lives that they will be independent. It will be a cultural immersion for them. They will be working, and they will be living in a different country,” he added.

The spokesperson said, “The College was approached by a company called TEEP, Training Education and European Projects – a project management company which serves as a liaison between the Department of Education in the UK and the client, in this case, Bermuda College – looking to expand the reach of the Turing scheme.”

“They reached out to all the overseas territories, but Bermuda College made it happen,” said Mr. Jackson, who added that the College had submitted a bid to take part in the scheme next year.

The spokesperson said, “The students will stay in bed and breakfast accommodation in their host countries and have all been set up with internships, matching their college studies, at local companies, as well as local tutors.

“Thirty per cent of students going are from a disadvantaged background – a key requirement of the Turing scheme.

“Elisha Miller, the Coordinator for Student Employment, said that in her 13 years’ experience at Bermuda College, she had never seen so many students show interest when an initial workshop was held on the scheme.”

“Cultural immersion is huge,” she said. “It is an experience you cannot pay for. We have had parents coming up to us saying ‘thank you, thank you for doing this for our child’.

“It’s then that you realise how impactful and life changing this experience will be. That is what makes it so rewarding to be involved.”

The spokesperson said, “One of the students, Bianca Veloso, 22, who is going to Brussels, in Belgium, said she wanted to gain more experience.”

Ms Veloso, who has just graduated from the College in business administration, added: “I have a passion for traveling and I want to experience a different culture, try different foods and meet different people.”

Cyniqua Anderson, who is studying art and design and who will be travelling to Salerno, Italy, said: “I’m an older student and at a pivot point in my life.

“I decided to go back to school at 35, starting a whole new career, so I thought this internship would be a great opportunity to get experience, but also international experience in a new field.”

She will be interning with an interior designer and added: “The work experience is the most valuable part, to see what it’s really like as an interior designer. I think that will have tremendous benefits for when I come back to Bermuda.”

The spokesperson said, “Students and two accompanying staff per country will leave for Belgium and Italy on May 31 and on June 3 for Cyprus.
