Harbourfront Restaurant raised nearly $25,000 for BUEI’s education programmes through a gourmet lunch and art auction.

A spokesperson said, “The award-winning Harbourfront Restaurant hosted a gourmet lunch and art auction on Friday, April 11, that raised close to $25,000 for the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI].

“All proceeds are being donated in support of BUEI’s education programmes, which include STEAM classes, labs, workshops, and explorer camps. The event was developed by Harbourfront’s General Manager, Pierangelo Lanfranchi, along with a committee led by Francesca Turner and Angela Cooney with the help of Becky Mortimer, Angie Bell and Jenn Morrison.”

Funds raised were generated through the sale of event tickets, draw for prizes and a silent auction of Mr. Lanfranchi’s outstanding photography.

Mr. Lanfranchi commented, “I am pleased to celebrate 25 years of photography, a journey that commenced at the Harbourfront [formerly La Coquille] Restaurant in May 2000. I held a birthday party there and received a two-megapixel digital camera, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

He continued, “My photographs have been published in Time Magazine, Italian and Bermudian magazines, as well as the BBC, National Geographic and more. Some of my works continue to be displayed in executive offices and hotels in New York, London, Lake Como and various other cities. Additionally, two of my bluebird photographs were transformed into Bermuda stamps. Throughout the years, I have supported a number of charities in Bermuda through my art sales.”

A spokesperson added, “Harbourfront and BUEI would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous contributions that made this fundraising event such a huge success: BGA, Pitt & Co, Europa, along with donations by Gosling’s, Two Rock Wines, Burrows & Lightbourn, Waterfront, Butterfield & Vallis, Viking, Donna Lindo, MEF Directors Emilio Barbieri and Teresa Chatfield. Finally, this event would not have been possible without the support of Harbourfront’s exceptional team led by Florian Neururer.”

BUEI’s CEO, Traci Burgess, said “On behalf of BUEI, we are grateful to everyone involved with coordinating and supporting this phenomenal fundraising event. BUEI’s education framework provides ocean literacy and environmental education for ages five and up. Last year, we delivered over 24,000 hours of education programming to 5,750 local students, with approximately 70% of our education encounters involving young people from public schools across the island.

“We are thankful for fundraising events like this luncheon and art auction that provide much needed financial resources for BUEI whilst raising awareness for our vision where the ocean around Bermuda is widely understood, appreciated and protected. The successful collaboration and exemplary community support demonstrated through this special event allows BUEI to continue the important work we are doing to develop generations of ocean advocates and inspire environmental stewardship for all. A spokesperson added, “Harbourfront is located on the lower level of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, with stunning views overlooking Hamilton Harbour. For more information visit www.harbourfront.bm.”
