Regiment Helps Revitalize Jamaican School

Students and teachers at Norwich Primary School in Jamaica are benefiting from a brighter, more welcoming environment after Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers, participating in Exercise Rum Runner 2025, helped revitalize the campus.

A spokesperson said, “While the majority of soldiers focused on infantry training, a dedicated team took on a special mission, giving the school a much-needed facelift.

“When we got there, it was really in disrepair,” said Sergeant Otis Nolan of the RBR’s logistics unit. “Brightening up the school lifted everyone’s spirits. It gives the students and teachers something to be proud of.”

The spokesperson said, “A team of 11, including a member of the Jamaica Defence Force, carried out painting and electrical work across the campus. Sgt Nolan, an electrician by trade and Warwick resident, addressed critical lighting issues to improve safety and visibility.”

“They light the school at night for security, but it was very dim,” he explained. “Adding more lighting was essential.”

The act of service resonated deeply with the RBR team.

“It’s amazing to give back,” Sgt Nolan added. “Seeing the children smile makes it all worthwhile. We’re here to serve our fellow man, that’s our top priority.”

Joy Thompson, Acting Principal of Norwich Primary, welcomed the transformation.

“The school was in dire need of freshening up,” she said. “The newly painted buildings uplift the entire campus. When you walk in now, it feels warm and inviting, perfect for learning.”

She continued, “We’re elated the Royal Bermuda Regiment chose Norwich. Their work means so much to me, my staff, and our students.”

Sergeant Calvin Bean Jr, from Hamilton Parish and a 21-year veteran of the RBR, called the experience rewarding.

“I love giving back and helping people feel good,” he said. “We’ve had a great team, and we’ve worked really well together.”

The spokesperson said, “The project concluded with a special performance by the RBR Band and Corps of Drums, who entertained students and staff during morning devotion. Children danced and sang along to familiar tunes, capping off the week with joy and celebration.
