Bermuda Athletes Meet King Charles III
Several past and present Bermuda athletes were among those who met King Charles III during his recent visit to the island.
The King visited Bermuda on his first trip to a British overseas territory since becoming monarch.
Among the athletes he met were swimmer Jack Harvey and high jumper Sakari Famous, who are due to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer,
Donna Raynor, Bermuda’s chef de mission, also met the King in Dockyard.
“It was a surprise for us, knowing he was going to be here the same week as the King’s Baton Relay [as part of the build-up to the Games],” Raynor told Bernews.
“Most of our athletes are overseas, but it was great for Sakari and Jack to meet him.
“The King wished them the best for the Commonwealth Games.”
Olympic triathlon champion Dame Flora Duffy also returned to the island to meet the King, along with Commonwealth Games medallists Clarence Saunders [high jump] and Conrad Lister [bowling].
Sanchez Smith, who won silver in the under-17 boys’ 3,000 metres at last month’s Carifta Games in Grenada, also met the King, as well as Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Olympic Association president.
“A truly special day: meeting His Majesty King Charles III alongside fellow Bermudian Commonwealth Games medallists,” Duffy wrote on social media.
“The King asked me about my Damehood, triathlon and injuries … which I unfortunately know a lot about!
“In the evening, a garden party at Government House. Grateful to have my first triathlon coach, Neil de Ste Croix, there to share it with. From humble Tri Hedz beginnings to meeting The King. A surreal evening.”
