Talbot-Inspired Style For Team Bermuda
Bermuda’s uniform for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday [July 23] will pay tribute to the Talbot Brothers, the island’s renowned music group.
Instead of the customary pink — or, in previous years, red — Bermuda shorts worn during the Parade of Nations, the island’s athletes will wear an outfit inspired by the Talbot Brothers’ signature attire.
Designed by local clothing retailer Tabs Bermuda, the uniform features a carnival shirt, trousers and a straw boater hat.
“I’ve chosen a uniform depicting the Talbot Brothers,” chef de mission Donna Raynor told Bernews.
“That’s how we will be dressed. I’m sure people will say, ‘Oh, no Bermuda shorts.’
“We’re excited about that.”
Only three Bermuda athletes will take part in the Parade of Nations — high jumper Sakari Famous, sprinter Caitlyn Bobb and discus thrower Tiara DeRosa. The swimmers compete the following day, while cyclist Conor White will not begin his campaign until later in the Games.
Triple jumper Jah-Nhai Perinchief, sprinters Norre Robinson and Nirobi Smith-Mills, and para sprinter Jessica Lewis will arrive in Glasgow after the opening ceremony.
“It would have been nice to have had a male athlete at the opening ceremony, but that’s just the way it’s worked out,” Raynor added.
The Talbot Brothers — Archie, Austin, Roy and Ross Bryan, along with their cousin Cromwell “Mandy” Manders — are celebrated for their performances during Bermuda’s tourism boom in the 1950s and 1960s.
The opening ceremony will be held at the OVO Hydro, marking the first time in Commonwealth Games history that the event has been staged entirely inside an indoor arena.
The Games run until August 2.
