Marsh/Guy: Student Broking Experience

August 19, 2010

Marsh and Guy Carpenter Bermuda Limited announced that “The Broking Experience” summer internship has been offered again this year following the success of the program’s launch in 2009. The two companies have chosen three Bermudian university students – Alison Bolton, Michael Coles and Samuel Outerbridge – to take part in this year’s internship, which provides students with meaningful hands-on experience in the insurance and reinsurance broking industries. The 12-day program exposes the interns to a number of disciplines including property, casualty, financial and professional liability, and reinsurance.

In addition to gaining true tactical insight into the operations of a broking firm and the insurance and reinsurance industries, the interns will learn about the value of the broker’s role in mediation and negotiation as well as the importance of building and maintaining relationships. As part of The Broking Experience, the students will have access to senior brokers with whom they can meet to obtain various perspectives on working in the industry.

“Bermuda is one of the top locations in the world for insurance and reinsurance, so in addition to hands-on broking experience the interns truly get a global perspective on the industry as they shadow our senior brokers,” said Kevin Fisher, Head of Office for Guy Carpenter Bermuda Limited.

Chris Reeves, a Managing Director of Marsh Inc. and President and Chief Operating Officer of Bowring Marsh (Bermuda) Ltd, added: “Brokers are the gateway to insurance markets. The Broking Experience provides valuable experience to its participants, stressing the importance of relationships with clients and, in particular, the markets.”

While The Broking Experience is primarily meant to be a supplemental education tool for Bermudian students, last year’s program led to intern Devin Page joining the Marsh team as an Insurance Assistant.
