Commonwealth Games Athlete Update

Bermuda’s athletes are in India competing against the best of the best in the Commonwealth Games. Our top performances so far have been from national record holder Kiera.Aitken who has made it through to the semi-finals, and Jacklyn Lambert who recording the first win for Bermuda when she defeated Uganda’s Jalia Nanfuka on the tennis court.

Ms..Aitken competed in the 100m Backstroke Women Qualification Heat 4, swimming in Lane 2 she finished 5th with a time of 1:04.82, this time saw her qualify for the semi-finals with the 14th fastest time.

Also in the pool, Nick Thomson finished 3rd in the 50m Butterfly Men’s Qualification Heat 3, finishing the race in a time of 27.08, while Roy-Allan Burch finished 7th in Heat 4 clocking 26.51. Mr. Burch finished 22nd overall, while Mr. Thomson finished 26th overall.

In tennis, Jacklyn Lambert earned the first win for Bermuda when she defeated Uganda’s Jalia Nanfuka 6 – 0, 6 – 1 in her Ladies First Round match. David Thomas and Gavin Manders both lost their Men’s Singles First Round matches.

Mr. Thomas went down in straight sets to Amresh Jayawickreme of Sri Lanka 6 – 1, 6 – 2, while Mr. Manders also went down in straight sets 6 – 1, 6 – 2 to Greg Jones of Australia.

In doubles tennis, Tara Lambert and David Thomas paired up and when down 6 – 1, in the first set to England’s Anna Smith and Ross Hutchins. Smith and Hutchins won the second set 6 – 2 to win the match in straight sets.

Top local squash player Nick Kyme went down to Scotland’s Alan Clyne in Men’s Singles in straight sets. Mr. Kyme lost the first set 11 – 2, before going down 11 – 0 in the second set and then he went down 11 – 2 in the third and final set.
