2010 Christmas Alcohol Awareness Campaign

December 13, 2010

CADA, encouraging responsible alcohol behavior, announced the start of their 2010 Christmas alcohol awareness campaign. The ABCD campaign is designed to encourage people not to drink and drive this holiday season. Signs and banners are placed in high traffic areas around the island with the message “Always use Bus, Cab or Designated Driver.”

Making the announcement today was CADA Chairman, Mr. Anthony Santucci, who stated, “As residents move around Bermuda during the Christmas and New Year period they will notice signs and banners in various locations around the island. These signs serve as a reminder that there are alternatives to driving and driving. The signs state clearly what the options available are: Always use Bus, Cab or Designated Driver.”

Mr. Santucci added, “The signs and banners are placed on roads that have high volumes of traffic. They are there to alert anyone who will be socializing and drinking alcohol this holiday season to have an arrangement in place before they leave home about how they plan to return safely.

“The signage campaign is supported on television by a 60 second ad which serves as a further reminder, together with a radio ad that will be heard on local stations during the holiday season. The ads, signs and banners are designed to send a clear and consistent message, we want people to employ responsible alcohol behavior and not to drink and drive. We want all residents in Bermuda to have a safe and happy holiday season.” concluded Mr. Santucci.

Hi BERNEWS, every year CADA has an anti drink drive promotion during the holiday season. Perhaps they could team up with the Corp of Hamilton and Bda Police service and change the start hour for parking tickets on Saturday mornings to begin at 10 or 11 am. If you live on either end of the island and stay out celebrating your taxi home and back to town cost almost $100 add a $50 parking ticket to it and NO wonder persons take the risk and hope for the best…

Why not provide car hangers or some other device that hangs in the car and says “I did the right thing and I’m getting a break on my parking”
instead of making it financially difficult to make the RIGHT choice.

Ps the free bus leaves too late for many people

I agree with the above statement, I think the free taxis should be advertised better and moved to a more visible location (i.e front street, but the “i drive slower than a 90 year old in a brand new car” taxi drivers won’t give up that spot, obviously..) AND people who leave their cars in town shouldn’t have to pay parking fines.

CADAs message is great, yes, but running around going “don’t drink and drive!” isn’t helping anyone. It’s like marching for peace. They need to do more.
