BIU Signs Wage Agreement With Government

July 6, 2011

Government and the Bermuda Industrial Union have signed off on an agreement for a 1.65 percent wage increase for workers backdated to January 1.

The settlement — signed at a ceremony held at the BIU headquarters yesterday [Jul.5] — ends a protracted pay dispute for Government workers which dates back to the start of the year.

Assistant Cabinet Secretary Judith Hall-Bean and BIU president Chris Furbert signed the new agreement on behalf of Government and the unionised workers.

Every BIU member on the public payroll will now receive an additional $17 per week as Government dropped its initial proposal for a wage freeze. But Government refused to back down in the face of union demands to lift a ban on overtime.
