Videos: St George’s Celebrate Cup Match Victory

August 5, 2011

[Updated with videos] Last week he was on the pitch and this week he was riding a horse to St. George’s Cricket Club [SGCC] to celebrate his team’s victory in the 2011 Cup Match Classic.

A long standing tradition, the post-Cup Match victory march was held this evening [Aug.5] in St George’s. After team captain Oronde Bascome climbed on the horse, the crowd erupted and the procession was underway.

Mr Bascome led the way from King’s Square to the SGCC. He held the hard earned trophy along the way, and St George’s players, coaches, residents and supporters followed along to the sound of drumbeats.

Hundreds of Bermudians turned out – many wearing the signature blue and blue of St George’s supporters – to cheer on the team as they made their way from the square. Excited family and friends gathered at the club where they were entertained by the St Georges Original Dancerettes.

Upon arrival, the players were announced individually by SGCC president Neil Paynter to applause from the fans. Mr Paynter thanked the selection committee and club executives, and gifts and awards were presented to the team members.

Following the presentation, the crowd continued to mingle while music was playing – including a Buju Banton song of which the line “There’s no life in the West, I know the East is the best” drew a huge crowd reaction.

Following a nail biting afternoon of cricket last week, St George’s won the 2011 Cup Match Classic held at the Wellington Oval. Fans of both sides were enthralled by the action packed game, which saw plenty of twists and turns before St George’s finally claimed the win, and the bragging rights that go along with it.
