Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

October 11, 2011

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month — and the Centre Against Abuse has embarked on a promotional campaign to raise awareness of the social ill.

Among other activities, the Centre is placing posters at locations across the island including the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, MarketPlace stores in Shelly Bay, Hamilton, Heron Bay and Somerset and at Lindo’s in Devonshire.

The Centre also had a showcase set up on a stage at PrimaDiva at 75 Reid Street, across from Chop Sticks, showing a family in chains symbolising  the abusive dynamics at play in the household.

The showcase was on display until October 8.

The Centre Against Abuse is a charity aimed at eradicating abusive relationships in Bermuda.

Its mission is to provide shelter, support and tools for those involved in abusive relationships; and to create advocates for an abuse-free Bermuda community through education and prevention.

The Centre says while no one is exempt from abuse, women aged between 20 and 24 are at the greatest risk of non-fatal intimate partner violence and highest rates of rape and sexual assault.
