Bermuda Cited In India Corruption Case

February 29, 2012

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation will soon send judicial requests to Bermuda and the United Kingdom seeking details of money trail in a widening political corruption case in which former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran is an accused.

The CBI has alleged the former Cabinet Minister received $118 million as kickbacks from the Indian-Malaysian telecom company Aircel, sources told the Press Trust of India today [Feb.29]. These allegations have been denied by Mr. Maran.

Tracking the money trail, the CBI probe has reached the shores of Bermuda and the United Kingdom from where the money was routed to reach Indian companies, agency sources said.

They said the agency might send Letters Rogatory in the first week of March to the UK, Bermuda besides Malaysia and Mauritius as planned earlier.

The agency had earlier confined its probe to Malaysia and Mauritius in connection with alleged routing of money in the takeover of Aircel by Malaysian giant Maxis, they said.

Aircel group is an Indian mobile network operator headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, that provides wireless voice, messaging and data services in India. It is a joint venture between Maxis Communications Berhad of Malaysia and Sindya Securities & Investments Private Limited,  with Maxis Communications holding a majority stake of 74 percent.

India signed a pact with Bermuda in October to facilitate exchange of information between the two countries regarding tax evasion.

Wherever there are legitimate business opportunities there will be people out to exploit them for personal gain. It doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the opportunity, institution or nation. Corruption is a series of individual choices. The solution is to create a strong infrastructure of oversight, regulation and consequences to deal with the individuals who choose to cheat and steal.
