February 10, 2012

Speaking after the guilty verdict this afternoon [Feb.10], the father of murder victim Shaki Crockwell said justice has been served and his son can rest in peace.

Derek Spalding, 36, was found guilty of the 2007 murder of footballer Shaki Crockwell. His father Danny Crockwell said, “He got what he had coming to him. He took my best friend, my best friend. But the Almighty has done his work.”

Mr Crockwell celebrates the guilty verdict outside Court:

Mr Crockwell’s father continued on to say, “What you do in the dark has to come out in the light. Shaki Crockwell can rest in peace. My mother can rest in peace, and I can get sleep now. Four years I have not had any rest. My heart feels so good. It feels good, to all his brethrens, nieces and nephews justice has been done.”

Mr Crockwell said his son’s children have been coping very well, while another member of the family spoke and said they have all been waiting for this for 4 years.

He, and other members of the family, thanked the Bermuda Police Service, the Detectives, the Jury, those that came forward and also extended their thanks to the entire community for the support.

“Justice has been served,” said Mr Crockwell. “My son can rest in peace.”

You call 30 yrs justice served for a life taken?

    • DC says:

U don’t get, do u? Life is life til the day he dies. Yes, at some point he will be ELIGIBLE for parole but it would still take some time before he could get out. But he has to finish out his original sentence first.

      • Politely Pompous says:

Uh-he was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 1997 for armed robbery and shooting someone. He was released in 2007-TEN YEARS LATER! So you can expect people to be cynical-when will he get out this time? I know they just passed ammendments regarding parole with those committed of serious crimes having to do at least two-thirds of their sentence now but even that isn’t enough. If you commit murder-especially premeditated or ‘first-degree’-you should be given life with NO possibility of parole! You should NEVER see freedom again! Your victim is dead forever so you should remain in prison FOREVER!

I hope this sociopath dies in prison-he is clearly a very dangerous individual!

      • Whistling Frog says:

No, I don’t get it. How can anyone rest in peace knowing that a person convicted of murder is still entitled to 3 square meal a day, shower, gym, library and other liberties that will sustain him/she until their released… The victim is dead, my he rest in peace.
Genesis 9:6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man. That’s the sacredness of life… Have we not taught our children these things? Blood is sacred and its not to be taken!
Exodus 21:12 He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.

    • jr says:

depends on where they do 30 years; let them do their time in a north korean prison camp or worst. i doubt if they will last a minor fraction of 30 years

      • Whistling Frog says:

Depends on where? Nowhere but this country says that life is 30 yrs…. SMH!
