“Pirates” Board The Spirit Of Bermuda

February 4, 2012

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation kicked off its First Annual Pirates of Bermuda Fundraiser yesterday [Feb.3] at Albouy’s Point with the goal of raising at least $100,000 towards supporting the continued operation of its various youth programmes.

To date, over 2,300 students have been student crew on board Spirit of Bermuda, experiencing character-building traits like teamwork, self-confidence, accountability and more.

In this 18th century re-enactment, Governor Richard Gozney has authorized privateers by letters of marque to kidnap community members for their riches. The hostages have until Friday, March 2nd to raise enough ransom to be released or will have to walk the plank.

Former Premier Sir John.Swan was ‘kidnapped’ yesterday by pirates, and  if he – and the other – hostages do not raise enough funds by next month they will have to walk the plank, and go overboard.

The public can visit piratesofbermuda.com to view the list of hostages, and donate towards a hostage’s ransom or towards making them actually walk the plank on March 2nd. Part of the proceeds raised will go towards the growing medical expenses of 15‐year-old CedarBridge student Nahge O’Brien, who is currently battling leukemia.

I really admire Sir John. I wish he was Premier again-he’d get us out of this mess we’re in. People are so cynical and nasty about him, but Bermuda was really on top during his heyday and so many things we take for granted now, he had a large role in implementing. Plus, he’d go around to talk to the guys on Court Street with NO BODYGUARDS, to find out about their struggles. Anybody could stop and talk to him on the streets when he was Premier. Do we see any PLP Premiers (past or present) or Gov’t MP’s with ther hands on the pulse of the normal folks these days? NO.

Politely Pompous I totally agree with you 150%. The PLP are so out of touch.

The PLP has no sense of humour. I’ll never forget attending the Not The Um Um Show some years ago. There sat, at the table next to me, Paula Cox, Jennifer Smith & other PLP (opposition) members.

Any jokes putting down the UBP were hilarious. Any targetibg the PLP were met with stone faces.

I agree Sir John is a good man but I feel money has gone to his head & he’s lost the plot along his way to riches. How many empty office buildings do we need? I understand his new project with 141 front street as an energy efficient building but unless he drops the his high rent costs less of a BELCO bill just won’t cut it for IB. Cayman has prime commercial real estate buildings going for $40 a square foot plus low energy cost so they beat us hands down.

This is a great idea! It would be nice if there was some type of pirate dress up show in the summer for young visitors to see. Bermuda is lacking loads in family fun that the competition offers. No amount of casinos in Bermuda will generate a financial gain that family fun does. This is why the shareholders of Disney & Universal only build small casinos in their massive theme parks. Not saying we can be the next disney as it would be wishful thinking but we have lots of potential unused land on the east side. If I had the funds I would build a decent size indoor/outdoor park on the old club med site.
