ACE, HSBC, Deloitte Summer Internship Program

June 4, 2012

ACE Group, HSBC Bermuda, and Deloitte today [June 3] announced the launch of the 2012 Summer Internship Program [SIP], now celebrating its Tenth year.

During the 10-week program, students will work at each of the three companies. At ACE, the students will focus on insurance and reinsurance, at HSBC Bermuda on finance and risk management, and at Deloitte on assurance and accounting. The SIP runs from June 4 – August 10, 2012.

“ACE, HSBC Bermuda and Deloitte take great pride in having led the Summer Internship Program for the past decade. We have strived to make this program one that would thoroughly prepare students for a career in business. By the end of this year’s program, 122 students will have had the opportunity to develop their skills, and learn to think and work as leaders”, said Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, Bermuda Operations of ACE.

The 2012 SIP participants are:

  • 1. Dara Alizadeh University of Pennsylvania
  • 2. Queena Francis Clark Atlanta University
  • 3. Matt Gerardo St. Francis Xavier University
  • 4. Caitlin Gordon Lafayette College
  • 5. Scott Nearon Morehouse College
  • 6. Yvonna Osborne Temple University
  • 7. Samantha Pickering City University
  • 8. Danielle Richards Acadia University
  • 9. Anuli Roberts University of Hertfordshire
  • 10. Sarah Russo St. John’s University

In addition to the business component, the SIP promotes good corporate citizenship through community service projects. The projects are designed to provide the students with hands-on learning experiences, as well as develop and strengthen their team building and leadership skills.

This year the SIP has selected the following two community projects: Bermuda Hospital Charitable Trust and Hilary’s Place. Six students will be assigned to each project and will take it from conception to implementation. Both teams will present final reports and recommendations to the project stakeholders at the end of the SIP in August.

The first team of students assigned to Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT), will develop a marketing strategy to educate the youth on healthcare philanthropy. BHCT anticipates these students will provide a dynamic and innovative plan that will engage the young community in an effort to enhance and reshape healthcare philanthropy.

Wendy Augustus, Executive Director of Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust stated, “As BHCT seeks to engage the community at large, we have asked the SIP Interns to develop a youth driven component for our campaign. It will be exciting to see what they propose and to implement a program developed for and by young people of Bermuda.

“The goal is to educate the youth on healthcare philanthropy and to encourage their philanthropic contribution to the Why It Matters campaign, with the aim of fostering budding generations of community conscious people.”

The second team will be assigned to Hilary’s Place. Marian Sherratt, Project Coordinator for Hilary’s Place stated, “It is very exciting to be chosen for this year’s Summer Internship Program. Hilary’s Place began in January of this year as a resource and respite centre for family caregivers.

“By having the students develop our strategic and marketing plans we can now take a huge step forward in supporting our family caregivers, while giving the students an opportunity to develop an organisation from its earliest stage. Being chosen also reinforces our fundamental belief that the need in the community is great and Hilary’s Place is helping to meet that need.”

Mark Baumgartner, Principal, Deloitte said, “An integral component of our Summer Internship Program is the community projects in which our students work together in teams and deliver strategic advice to the stakeholders of the selected organizations. Additionally, through the community service projects, the students will experience our desire to make meaningful social impact in our community.

“We are thrilled to have The Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and Hilary’s Place as our Community Service partners for our 2012 program. We selected these two charities as they provide worthwhile opportunities for us to give back to those that have given so much to Bermuda.

“On behalf of the Summer Internship Program, Deloitte is pleased to support our 2012 interns as they develop core competencies through the successful completion of their community projects and as they become impactful additions to the business community and our island. Out of 29 applicants for the 2012 SIP, 12 students were selected from disciplines including accounting, finance, environmental science, marketing, and social sciences.

Karyn Mooney, Senior Human Resources Manager, HSBC Bermuda stated, “Connections made and relationships built during the SIP have on many occasions helped to smoothen the transition from student to full time employee.

“Over the years, we have had the opportunity to welcome a number of SIP alumni back to HSBC Bermuda as full time employees, and we are definitely looking to continue this trend.

The Summer Internship Program was first launched in 2003, after ACE, HSBC Bermuda and Deloitte recognized the need for a program that would foster an understanding of the Bermuda international business sector. Ten years later, the program is still delivering on its intended mission.
