Siese Completes Youth Worlds Championships

July 20, 2012

Owen Siese completed the 2012 Four Star Pizza ISAF Youth Worlds in the Boy’s Laser Radial on Friday [July 20] in a respectable 35th place out of 58 boats.

Siese’s best race of the twelve race regatta was an 8th place. This was the Sandy’s Boat Club racer’s second time at the Youth Worlds. He placed 39th at the 2011 event.

According to the ISAF public relations team, “Cool heads and steely nerves were among the vital attributes required to achieve ultimate success as the 2012 Four Star Pizza ISAF Youth World Sailing Championships finished on Dublin Bay in Ireland.

“Across the seven different classes the finale was marked by light, conflicting breezes with at least as many title upsets unfolding through the day as there were expected winning scenarios playing out on cue.”

Winning the Boys Laser radial division was Mark Spearman of Australia followed by local lad, Finn Lynch of Ireland and Hermann Tomasgaard of Norway. Spearman eliminated American Mitchell Kiss from the lead and a podium finish by using the last race to cover him heavily and sail him down to the back of the fleet.

Kiss had been the leader of the regatta for most of the time but could not afford a second high score finish as he already had another large “drop” race due to a Blag Flag penalty in race 8.

Spearman on the other hand had sailed cleanly throughout and was able to use the last race as his “drop” allowing him to sacrifice himself in his successful attempt to thwart the American’s performance in the final race. Kiss ended up in 4th place.
