Video: Premier Cox’s Speech At PLP Banquet

November 5, 2012

Premier Paula Cox delivered the Keynote Speech at Saturday night’s [Nov 3] PLP Annual Delegates Conference Banquet at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel.

“You look good, you look bold, you look fearless,” Ms Cox told the audience. “And you look like what we are…winners.”

“We will not go back, we will not back down. And we will continue to turn up the heat and the volume. And I am honoured to be here tonight.”

“We will be going back as your Government, and we will be moving Bermudians forward. Forward to the future. And I am confident we will win at the polls in this year’s General Election,” she said to the applause of the audience.

“We will win as our philosophy is one that puts people first, and that believes in Bermudians. We will win as our philosophy is based on core principles of fairness, social and economic empowerment, and transformation, and the empowerment of Bermudians.”

Ms Cox continued on to say: “Sadly, many Bermudians look at politics today and don’t like what they see. And who can blame them. Since we entered this election year, we have seen monthly polls and daily attacks on the government.

“Months of excessive finger pointing, months of attempts to exploit fear and foster division…all to score political points.

“Our people have had enough. So much so, that for some it seems it doesn’t matter who wins the next election. I’m here tonight to tell you that such a view couldn’t be further from the truth. It absolutely does matter.”

“You may feel disenchanted with the political process. But never forget, that we are not the same as our Opposition. Our party has a very different tone, a different direction.

“There is a clear choice in this campaign. A plan for the future, or a plan to go backwards to the failed UBP policies in a repackaged model.”

Ms Cox continued: “The OBA has waged the same old Bermuda blame game. You know, if you don’t have a strong track record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.”

“And make no mistake – when we are attacked in this campaign, we will respond aggressively,” she said to applause from the audience. “We are principled, and will not hesitate to set the record straight.”

Speaking about before the PLP took power in 1998, Ms Cox said: “There were no Phil Butterfields running banks. Or Patrick Tannocks running insurance companies. There was no Brown and Co…. just Smith’s and Triminghams.

“There were no Cheryl Listers or Jeremy Coxs heading the regulatory authority. There were no Vince Inghams running the utility company. There was no Williams Estate, only restricted land that was not allowed to be developed.

Ms Cox listed off a number of additional business executives, and continued: “There was no Hott 107, there was no Fresh TV. No reformed Corporation of Hamilton.”

“Talk shows were far less open and free flowing. No one can legitimately accuse us of muzzling free speech. No blogs, no matter how vicious, no matter how vitriolic, no matter how politically incorrect some of those on the blogs may be…everyone has a voice that can be heard. And we take fairness to a fault, and we respect the right to disagree.”

“Bermuda faces big challenges, and the PLP has real solutions. When the PLP came into office, we inherited a divided country where a forgotten group of people were sidelined.  We have changed the equation…now its people first.”

  1. Sandgrownan says:

Turn up the heat and volume? WTF does that mean? You going to double down and be even more incompetent and corrupt?

    Idiots.

    • UBP/OBA = fake a$$ party says:

@ Sandgrowan, this came from one of you’re most respected black Mp it is what it is now WTF!!!

As Jim Woolrridge said “those little white boys don’t mind you being in charge as long as they can tell you what to do – “The House That Jack … C.V. (Jim) Woolridge

      • Funny says:

“The PLP have out UBPed the UBP” – Julian Hall

      • Sandgrownan says:

She has presided as Finance Minister and Premier over utter failure, incompetence and shady dealings.

        WTF indeed, respected by whom?

      • navin johnson says:

        Betty?

  2. Sandgrownan says:

“There is a clear choice in this campaign. A plan for the future, or a plan to go backwards to the failed UBP policies in a repackaged model.”

Yeah, becasue the PLP have been such a success?

  3. joe says:

What arrogant nonsense. The UBP created the wealth the PLP has pilfered. IN any event, as long as leaders in the PLP talk like this, ignoring what is now a majority of people who live, work, and contribute to this country, Bermuda will fail. They may win, but Bermuda will fail. It will fail because this party fails to reach out to the majority who help makes this island work.
And BTW, the PLP is not winning the next election. Trouble ahead, certainly. But at least not under the PLP’s racist banner.

    • Exactly says:

The UBP built the wealth off stealing from cheap black labour and not giving us a fair opportunity to participate in the society…RACISM is RACISM

  4. LOL (original TM*) says:

Wow what a bunch of waffle. – case in point
“Months of excessive finger pointing, months of attempts to exploit fear and foster division…all to score political points.”

Maybe she should reread the stuff coming from the party she reps a little closer. Oh the irony……..

Yet and then there is this…

“Talk shows were far less open and free flowing. No one can legitimately accuse us of muzzling free speech. No blogs, no matter how vicious, no matter how vitriolic, no matter how politically incorrect some of those on the blogs may be…everyone has a voice that can be heard. And we take fairness to a fault, and we respect the right to disagree.”

So I remember when this just did not apply to the PLP’s own blog…….

Also I like how the Premier insinuates that some people could not have made it to where they made it to on their own merit. It was all the PLP…….

“Sadly, many Bermudians look at politics today and don’t like what they see. And who can blame them. Since we entered this election year, we have seen monthly polls and daily attacks on the government.” And yet neglects to mention where the hate is coming from today it’s not politics that people don’t like it’s the parties we have to choose from and all the “attacks” they push on each other. Was it not Premier Cox vs Bob Richards not to long ago echoed by the party’s (PLP) follow up attack? This speech was as much bs as the throne speech. Correction most of the throne speech. There were some interesting things but not much new in it.

    LOL

  5. swing voter says:

Get yur emerald elite Kool-aid by the gallon. Laced with the finest ingredients that are sure to produce the desired results….on sale now exclusively distributed by Alaska Hall imports…

  6. unreal says:

I would have a lot more respect for the PLP if they just admitted they have made some mistakes and are willing to change their approach to re-gain support from the electorate. Instead, we get more of the same….empty promises, over-condifidence and “we have to fool you” comments.
Why not say…….here’s what we did wrong and this is what we’re doing to fix it!

Being humble and transparent is much more powerful than acting elitist and arrogant.

    Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I cannot imagine another 4 years of this.

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Thank you for this comment,@ unreal. It has never been, “Sorry, I made a mistake” but rather “it’s all their (insert UBP, OBA, white folks, the world-wide recession) fault. We try to teach our kids to take responsibility for their actions, in fact, that is the mark of maturity. What kind of example are they setting, with this childishness?

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

Sorry, could not stand watching the video. Who &where is she talking about? Certainly not the PLP. Not Bermuda.

  8. Jim Bean says:

wow!!! Is she saying that Phil are there because they are blacks? This election will be nasty – nasty from the PLP – tehy will attack attack attack – that is all they know! Their ads are hilarious: achievements: berkely (costs overruns)
    Crusie ship pier (cost overruns)

All they have left is race – dont BE FOOLED

    • Wait 4 it says:

The only fools are you people in the OBA who think you’re winning the next election.

  9. Will says:

seriously how many damn banquets and parties does the PLP host? I swear every week there is something formal that the plp members are attending?! where’s the money coming from?!!!!!!

  10. Clive Spate says:

I heard Coxy felt a bit peckish after the banquet and the 7 series GP1 swung by KFC on the way home for a bargain bucket and a zinger tower meal to plug the gap until supper!!

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

A bit unnecessary all comments like this do is harden the resolve of those might have been a true swing voter. There is enough notable hypocrisy in the speech to look at………….

      LOL

  11. navin johnson says:

I think she is keeping the date of the election under her hat….

  12. Victor says:

I thought Deval Patrick (Governor of Massachussetts) was mean to give a keynote speech at this function. Curious as to why he did not?

  13. Ringmaster says:

I’ve known Patrick Tannock for many years and believed his well earned rise to be President of XL was due to his hard work and knowledge. To learn his success was because of the PLP is pretty deflating and a low blow to a successful Bermudian in IB.

Also interesting that the video montage shown st the Banquet pretty much ihnored that most personally succesful PLP person, none other then Dr Ewart Brown. Just as if the PLP don’t want to remember him as their Premier at all. Rerwriting history I suppose, but his, and with the current Premier’s assistance, debt of $1.4 billion will continue for many years as his legacy

  14. Argosy says:

Ms Cox continued: “The OBA has waged the same old Bermuda blame game. You know, if you don’t have a strong track record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.”

How does she match this statement with the PLP’s track record, I wonder??

“Remember – Unethical but not illegal due to Bermuda’s out-dated corruption laws”……

Some people have conveniently short memories, including our P!

  15. JONO says:

Paula mentioned “Jeremy Cox” (Chairman opf Bda Monetary Authority…Isn’t he her brother?

  16. Katlyn says:

Realy been waiting for race to be brought up.

  17. The nitty gritty says:

So now the PLP are taking credit for installing Phil in HSBC as if he didnt earn it through merit over many years!
“We have changed the equation. Now it’s people first” direct quote- What was it before? Dogs and polar bears first?? PEOPLE? Who? To all you peeps out there, how’s this PEOPLE FIRST working out for you?
We know WHO people they are talking about and it rhymes with Friends and Family.
“No one can legitimately accuse us of muzzling free speech” HA!! We only have free speech thanks to the internet and Bernews allowing anonymity. Boy there would be some payback and get you back going on if that didnt exist. You can hear the hatred in her voice…”no matter how vitriolic,..how vicious…” PLP you have no idea how much anger and resentment you have caused with your misdeeds and willful neglect of this country’s economy and reputation. What you have done to the thousands now out of work and many more soon to be, if you get back in. Expect a tsunami of contempt and rebellion if you think we will ALL tolerate 4 more years!
OH, and it has no connection to OBAMA and his success or failure. I know Obama and you aint he!

  18. Vulpes says:

What a spoiled brat this woman has turned out to be

  19. Kiskadee says:

We must vote this party out. They are not interested in helping the ordinary person. They are just out for what they can get for themselves. This banquet is typical. They love to get dressed up in the latest fashions trying to outdo each other. The working man has less and less and they have more with their big houses, fancy cars and clothes and trips overseas. The OBA may take a while to turn this mess around but let us hope and pray that they are honest and hardworking and we get the old Bermuda back . Dont be fooled by all this talk about race. That is all they can manage to try and persuade people to vote for them again.
