Webcast Replay: Non-Mariners Race In Sandys

August 4, 2013

[Updated with 4.5 hour webcast replay] The annual Non-Mariners Race will be held today [Aug 4], with the always popular ‘non-event’ involving strange and unusual watercraft taking to the water, most sinking within minutes.

Hosted by the Society of Non Mariners, the ‘non-event’ will be held at Mangrove Bay in Sandys parish, getting underway at around noon.

The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition.

There are marine restrictions in place, and the inshore area of Mangrove Bay extending to King’s Point / Watford Bridge ferry stop has been designated as a no Jet Ski zone.

Non-Activities Include:

  • Non-Colors Raising 11:58am + 27 sec.
  • Non-Penguins Fly Past 1:07pm + 33 sec.
  • Non-Noodle Race 1:32pm + 64 sec.
  • Non-Memorial to our Mascot 2:21pm + 81 sec.
  • Non-Calypso Pipe Band 2:43pm + 45 sec.
  • Non-Craft Race 3:39pm + 12 sec.
  • Non-Trophy & Non-Prizegiving 5:26pm + 56 sec

The Non Mariners Dance Party Cruise will leave Albouys Point at 11am, and head up to Mangrove Bay where it will stay until 5pm, when it will cruise back to Hamilton.

Set to be held aboard the MV Elizabeth, the party will feature entertainment from DJ KEEM, SiiD James, and DJ Drifter. The organizers will have 1,000 free Jello shots ready to be served, along with a slew of games, raffles, and complimentary food. More information on the Party Cruise is here.

Update: Non Mariners is underway, with “non floats” including “HMS Bootlegging Bliss” as well one called “Cannonair”.

  1. Eastern says:

Why couldn’t they make it a no-wake zone and ban jet skis when there are fitted dinghies sailing in Mangrove Bay? I was there last week for fitted dinghy races and the boat wash was non-stop, while jet skis were a constant nuisance and the jet skis don’t pay any attention to the rules of the water. In fact; all the places that the fitted dinghies race, show some respect for the only truely Bermudian sport.

Jet skis (or the abuse of Jet Skis) make a good argument for making rocket propelled grenades legal (just joking).

    • Impressive says:

why couldnt they just cancel the foolishness?? Alcohol, vanity, sunchine, wanna be gangsters on jet skis (prbably with guns)

      • Luis Suarez says:

Why dont you just bore off? It’s Sunday, the churches are still open. Go sit in them.

    • Franklin jr says:

Good luck with that – it’s sad, but the dinghys just don’t fit in with the new borrowed Jamaican culture Bermuda

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

I am no fan of jet skis in general. Oh the machine itself is fine but it appeals to the same lunatic mentality that we see speeding in packs & overtaking on corners. It somehow has the ability of taking a normally sane person & turning them into the same frame of mind when they get on the things.

Interesting that this year jet skis are banned in the huge area which is the really the whole of the anchorage area for the NMR. As usual a few fools racing around the area with swimmers have spoiled a good thing for the many.

Accepted that policing this event is a nightmare but to some extent the BPS are to blame. For years they have not booked people. Enforce a ‘no tolerance’ policy, confiscating skis & the word will get out in minutes. The insanity will instantly stop.

  3. mangrove tree says:

Jet skis need to be permanently banned from all harbours ,bays, beaches and kept 1000 meters offshore, 100meters from any other craft operating on the water.
Also much like the lion fish culling program a jet ski culling program would be a brilliant idea ,perhaps the Gov. could hand out GPMG’s to all willing participants.

    • ignorance Is Bliss says:

What an ignorant statement to make. There have been how many incidents this year with boats crashing into land??? If you were to breathalyze the captains of every ship on the water at Mangrove Bay today I would be surprised if more than 50% passed the test. I would also be surprised if less than 75% had consumed some alcohol! Some of those boats. have 15 or more people on them. For decades now, drinking and boating is more than tolerated, it is encouraged. I have quite often witnessed the passengers supplying alcohol to the captain while they are operating the boat!!! Can you imagine this happening on land while driving a bus. There would be outrage! But because this happens on a boat and there are no yellow lines on the water – we act like it is okay.

The problem on the water is NOT your jetski riders my friend, the bigger problem might just be you!

  4. SoMuchMore says:

will we see a kfc bucket with chris furbert’s face on it like last year? i hope so. lol

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

Unfortunately the NMR has become little more than a waterborne venue for a party. Can you imagine what the bottom of Mangrove Bay would look like if it were possible to drain it. Nothing but bottles & cans.

Rather than put some effort into something & create a non craft & be part of the show, it is much easier to pack the cooler & go.

    • Truthful says:

Mangrove Bay sea bed is cleaned by dozens of people like me just after NMR, no long lasting damage is done Mr Drifter.

I suggest you let your hair down, and throw your trash in a bag on the boat.

      There. That was easy.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

I was not thinking so much of right in front of the club. More like the huge area that boat anchor in all the way out to the sandbar.

I am well aware that the NMR people take care of the area close to the club & beach thank you.

        • Truthful says:

No problem TD, glad to help out. Be aware though the collection area is very wide, and doesn’t just include shoreline. For every 50 bottles, there is a pair of ray bans. The planet reaps and sews. And so do we.

          • Niave Observer says:

Absolutely correct. I have participated myself with the members of the local dive community to do cleanup dives post non-mariners. I have been pleasantly surprised that it is not as bad as your would think after the NMR, but we do bring up a pretty good selection of bottles, also many other lost items that have gone overboard including full cases of beer.

  6. Robert says:

So much more you are such piece of *h@t !!!!!

    • Strawberry Mivvi says:

Except that everyone is laughing at Chris Furball. I think so much more is spot on actually.

      • SoMuchMore says:

thanks strawberry. let’s meet tomorrow at kfc 5:15pm for a chicken leg and think of our dear friend chris

  7. Terry says:

Seems like Somerset is the new Bermuda.
Cruise Ships, enterprise, Cup Match trophies, Extended vacations.

    1/2 Billion dollars in vessels.

    Go OBA.

  8. Niave Observer says:

Glad to see that both party leaders, Craig and David have a good sense of humour and were out and about with the people enjoying the event. Somehow I could never picture Dr. Brown or Paula out for this sort of event, posing with the floats lampooning them.

    • Teacher Teacher says:

I agree. It was good to see them both just laughing it off!

  9. Mariner says:

Great day at the west end.Kudos to Sandys Boat Club for hosting such a marvellous event, will be back next year.
