Police: Weekend Gun Incidents Gang Related

August 12, 2013

Although investigators have not formally linked the three firearm incidents that occurred this past weekend, the evidence indicates they are “gang related and not random,” Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels said today [Aug 12].

Shortly after 10pm on Friday [Aug 9] there were gunshots fired in the Camp Hill area of Southampton, and around 45 minutes later shots were fired again in the Parsons Road/Deepdale area of Pembroke.

In both cases witnesses described two males wearing dark clothing, riding a dark colored cycle firing a number of shots. This was followed by a third shooting in the Cedar Hill, Warwick area just before 2am on Sunday [Aug 11]. No one was reported injured in any of the three incidents.

Police investigators are requesting persons with any information and/or who saw two males on dark colored motor cycles, wearing dark clothing immediately before or after these 3 incidents occurred, to please contact police at telephone 295-0011 or the Crime Stoppers Confidential Hotline at 1-800-8477.

The full statement from Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels is below:

The Bermuda Police Service confirmed that there were three separate firearms incidents during the past weekend.

  • 1.Shortly after 10pm on Friday 9th August 2013, police received several reports of gunshots being fired in the area of Camp Hill/Fork Lane, Southampton. On attendance police spoke to a number of persons in the area as well as consulting with on duty emergency staff at the hospital, but there were no injuries reported. Witnesses described two males wearing dark clothing, riding a dark colored cycle firing a number of shots in the area. Forensic evidence removed from the scene confirmed that a firearm was used.
  • 2.About 10.45pm on Friday 9th August 2013, police received several reports of shots being fired in the area of Parsons Road/Deepdale, Pembroke. As in the incident above, on police arrival at the scene, officers spoke to a number of persons in the area and again consulted with hospital emergency staff, but there were no reports of injuries resulting from gunshots. Witnesses described two males wearing dark clothing, riding a dark colored cycle firing a number of shots.
  • 3.The third shooting occurred in the area of Cedar Hill, Warwick just before 2am on Sunday 11th August 2013; again there were no reports of injuries. However when police were searching the area they encountered a man under suspicious circumstances, who was riding a motorcycle and failed to stop for police. A 24 year old Warwick man lost control of his motor cycle and was arrested by police for firearms related offences.

Members of the community will undoubtedly be alarmed by these three separate firearms incidents that occurred over the weekend. Recently we have all enjoyed a relative period of calm; however the Bermuda Police Service continues to work hard to target those persons that continue to commit firearms offences. The BPS wish to assure the Bermuda community that full investigations into these 3 matters have commenced, resources have been realigned to assist with these investigations, while additionally providing reassurance to the affected neighborhoods through high visibility police patrols and home visits by our Community Action Teams.

Although investigators have not formally linked the three incidents, the evidence gathered thus far indicates that these shooting are gang related and not random.

Police investigators are seeking the assistance from members of the community in apprehending those responsible for committing these violent acts and are requesting persons with any information and/or who saw two males on dark colored motor cycles, wearing dark clothing immediately before or after these 3 incidents occurred, to please contact police at telephone 295-0011 or the Crime Stoppers Confidential Hotline at 1-800-8477 [TIPS].

In closing I take this opportunity on behalf of the BPS to thank all those persons who have come forward and provided assistance thus far. The BPS is extremely encouraged by the amount of assistance received from the public recently resulting in progress being made in a number of high profile investigations, but as I often say “the Bermuda Police Service’s capacity to deal with crime depends to a large extent upon its relationship with the community.

  1. Really? says:

    Gang related?! You don’t say…
It’s Bermuda, people know who are behind these incidents but nothing is being done. Just like that case recently with the officer have relations with a “senior gang member.” We know who they are yet we haven’t done what is necessary to stop them… Frustrating…

    • Inspector Gadget says:

I like how you said WE… Had I have known, I would have said. If you know who they are, stand up in court and testify. Be the brave person you are. Yes the BPS might know who they are but in COURT evidence is key and if BPS take these criminals to court and they get off for lack of evidence (which has happened many of times), people like YOU will be the first to complain. So instead of saying WE know who they are, why don’t you lead by example and testify. (-__-)

      • Wow what a bright comment from such an intelligent Inspector gadget,Well gadget in the real world all the heroes are in the graveyard.

While I agree that we should assist as much as we can.please note that Bermuda is a small jurisdiction where everybody just about knows each other, and some in the legal fraternity from police,to lawyers to prosecutors are not all they are cracked up to be.

So going to the authorities is not always a good idea, unless your evidence is beyond the point were it is undeniable and even then the jokers can walk because of technicalities, so don’t be so ready to bash until you give yourself a chance to come out of that bubble that you live in.

        • Inspector Gadget says:

So, with that being said, the original message was redundant… Which my point clearly addresses.

Go-go pick on someone your own puny size.

police in bed with Gangsters,,WoW !
sounds like a script from Hollywood !

    • No it sounds like no matter how many years have passed, nothing has change, pretty much is the same as it was 30 plus years ago.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Hollywood didn’t invent Internal Investigation Divisions in the U.S.A. They exist because police officers are still human & can still be susceptible to temptations. I think this is part of the governor’s job here but not sure. If it is the governor’s job it must be an extremely difficult one being a newcomer not knowing if investigation is needed & where to start if it is.
