October 20, 2013

Sailors taking part in the biennial Newport Bermuda yacht race have been enjoying the event for many years, as this archival footage of the 1966 edition of the race shows.

The event goes ahead on even-numbered years, taking participants across 1,175 km of open ocean between Newport, Rhode Island and Bermuda.

The race was first performed in 1906 after being organized by The Rudder magazine editor Thomas Fleming Day; three boats took part, with the 38-foot yawl Tammerlane, captained by Day himself, reaching St. David’s Head in time for the victory.

Since its inception, the Newport Bermuda race has seen more than 4,500 boats and 46,000 sailors take part, bringing millions of dollars in spending to the island.
