Ethiopian Orthodox To Host Timket Service

January 18, 2014

Ethiopian Orthodox Church Bermuda genericBermuda’s Ethiopian Orthodox Church have invited the public to their Timket Service on Sunday [Jan 19] at 8:00am.

Timket [Ethiopian for Epiphany] commemorates Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan.

The clergy and faithful gather around a fresh water pool to pray, and the Priest prays while dipping the Holy Cross into the water asking blessings of Jesus Christ’s baptism to be renewed in everyone’s lives.

Immediately after the blessing he showers the crowd with water, not as baptism but as a renewal of baptismal vows.

A spokesperson from the Church said, “We the clergy and members of Debre Ganet Emmanuel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, hereby invite you to our Timket/Epiphany Service on January 19th 2014 at 8:00 am for Prayers Service and 9:00 am for Liturgy Service.

“Join us as we renew our Baptismal Vows. Following the service, fellowship will be service. A warm welcome awaits you.”

The Church is located on 16 Old Military Road, St. George’s [opposite the Police Barracks].
