“Our Man In Tehran” To Attend Bermuda Docs

April 14, 2014

Former Canadian ambassador to Iran Ken Taylor, who played a key role in the escape of six American diplomats from Tehran during the Iran Hostage Crisis, is among three special guests travelling to the Bermuda Documentary Film Festival, set to be held from April 17-20 at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI].

Mr. Taylor features prominently in the award-winning documentary film, Our Man in Tehran, screening at the festival on Friday, April 18 at 8.15pm.

Mr. Taylor will be joined at the festival by Drew Taylor, the film’s co-producer and co-director with Larry Weinstein and the film’s executive producer, Elena Semikina, of Toronto-based Film House Inc.

Drew Taylor also co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Wright; the film is based on the book of the same name, written by Mr. Wright.

All three festival guests will take part in a question and answer session after the screening of the film.

Our Man in Tehran has won four festival awards, taking the Audience Award at the Victoria International Film Festival, tying for the Audience Award at Cinefest in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, winning Best International Feature at the Charleston, South Carolina festival, and being one of three Picks for Best Feature Documentary by the North Carolina Film Critics’ Association at the Full Frame festival in Durham, North Carolina.

It tells the story of how Taylor – dubbed “our man in Tehran” by U.S. President Jimmy Carter – worked with Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark, the country’s Secretary of State for External Affairs Flora MacDonald, staff in Canada’s embassy in Tehran, and the CIA to spirit the six diplomats out of the country.

They escaped on January 28, 1980 after nearly three months in hiding. The affair became known as the “Canadian Caper.

“It will be a great honour to have all three festival guests in attendance at the screening of their film,” said festival director Duncan Hall. “Ken Taylor played a central role in one of modern history’s most dramatic events. It will be fascinating to hear his story, while Drew and Elena will help us understand the process of making the film.”
