Bermudian Filmmaker Gets Animation Funding
A Bermudian filmmaker has received an international grant to help bring his Afro-futuristic animated short film to the screen.
Alex-André Bassett began developing The Kazi: Village Rescue about six years ago.
His production company, Loquat Films, has been awarded the Filmmaker Assistance Programme Grant by the National Film Board of Canada, covering the film’s post-production expenses.
The film is a spin-off of an idea from a short story Mr Bassett wrote nearly ten years ago, shortly before leaving Bermuda for Vancouver, Canada.
Since then, he has collaborated with animators and illustrators to bring his lead character, Andreas, to life while building the world the character inhabits.
Village Rescue follows Andreas, a fearless young hero who must save a village from a mysterious threat using wit, determination, heart and the help of an unexpected sidekick.
A crowdfunding effort in January helped raise about 35 per cent of the estimated $25,000 production budget.
The post-production phase is expected to wrap at the end of next month. The short film will then be submitted to international film festivals in 2027 and 2028, including the Bermuda Black Film Weekend.
Mr Bassett said he has also received an invitation from Impact [Independent Media Producers of Creative Talent] to attend the inaugural Toronto International Film Festival: The Market conference next month.
He will use the event to network with film and broadcast professionals before the film’s release.
