Bermuda Team Earns Spot In CrossFit Open

April 26, 2014

CrossFit BDA has again earned the right to compete as a team in the Latin America Regionals for the 2014 CrossFit Games.

On February 27, 2014, the CrossFit Open commenced. During the CrossFit Open, a new workout is released each week for five weeks. Athletes have several days to complete the workout and submit their scores online, with either a video or validation by a CrossFit affiliate. The top CrossFit Open performers in each region advance to the regional qualifying events, held over the following two months.

There are 17 regional divisions, including 12 in North America and five in the rest of the world. The regional events include divisions for individuals of each gender, a number of Masters age groups, as well as co-ed teams comprised of three men and three women. The top athletes [up to three of each gender] and teams from each region are eligible to compete in the CrossFit Games held each year in July in Carson, California.

Only 30 teams are selected from across the region to compete in the weekend long event. This year, the regional qualifiers for the Latin America region will be held in Santiago, Chile from May 9 through May 11. This is the second consecutive year that CrossFit BDA has had a team earn a spot to compete on the international level of this burgeoning sport.

This year’s team consists of Marc Tucker, David Middleton, Mathew Macdonald, Jenny Malcolm, Sally Wombwell, and Tiffany Dawson. There will be three days of competition with each day consisting of at least two events. Everyone is very excited and working hard to make the best of this opportunity.”

“The chance to compete against the best in the region is something all of us are really looking forward to. We are going down there ready to work hard to surprise our friends in the region,” said Mathew Macdonald, co-owner of CrossFit BDA.

“Although the big event is just over three weeks away, training for the 2015 season has already begun. We are focused on improving our prospects for next year. By capitalizing on the excitement and energy after this year’s CrossFit Open, we are overlapping our regular CrossFit classes with focused strength, conditioning, and competition classes,” said Derek Hurdle, also a co-owner of CrossFit BDA.

“If you would like to learn more about CrossFit or the CrossFit Open and Regionals, come by and try out the free Community Class at 9.00am each and every Saturday morning.

“We keep these classes basic so that anyone can join in and complete a fun and tough workout. We ask everyone in attendance to pay a $5 fee and all of the money collected from these classes is given to a designated charity at the end of the month.
