PLP To Hold Second Town Hall On Immigration

July 1, 2014

On Thursday [July 3], the PLP will be holding a second town hall meeting on the topic of immigration and Bermuda status for PRC holders at the Dalton E. Tucker Primary School.

A spokesperson said, “The Progressive Labour Party invites the public to our second town hall meeting on immigration and status for permanent residency certificate holders. This meeting will be held at the Dalton E. Tucker Primary School on Thursday, July 3 at 6:30 pm.”

2 hour video showing the PLPs first Town Hall on immigration on June 26:

The PLP added, “Recently there has been increased attention to the immigration policy in Bermuda and we feel these town hall meetings will give the public the opportunity to hear the PLP perspective and also voice their own concerns and opinions.

“We in the PLP are in favour of comprehensive immigration reform which would begin by putting a halt to any processing of current status applications for PRCs.

“Panelists for this town hall will be Shadow Immigration Minister Mr. Walton Brown, Shadow Attorney General Mr. Michael Scott, Shadow Health Minister Ms. Kim Wilson and Senator Marc Daniels.”

These meetings follow a recent Court ruling which allowed for a pathway to status for Permanent Residence Certificate [PRC] holders.

  1. hmmm says:

This is crazy. They don’t want immigration reform or they would have done it when in power. What they want is the OBA to say something on the subject, anything, so they can twist it and grow a divide and hate in Bermuda. 100 people showed up to your last dividing session.

    Grow up PLP

    • BETTTY TRUMP says:

I think Mr. John Barritt puts it Brilliantly……

“The ruling could not have been entirely unexpected. Not by the Government. They had to know that it was either going to go one way or the other. There should have been a Plan A or a Plan B. The status quo of Plan A (pun unintended) obviously went out the window. Plan B? Was there even one? Government was slow to lodge an appeal (it went in at the last minute) while up on the Hill they told us the matter of status remains under review.”

“What’s curious then is not why Government voted against an Opposition amendment to maintain the status quo (pun intended) but why they also rejected the Opposition’s move simply to rise and report progress while the review was carried out.”

“It’s an approach that I employed when in Opposition and not an unreasonable one to take frankly.” – Mr. John Barritt in his Opinions Piece.

      • Terry says:

        Right on cue Betty.
        How much they pay you.
Now Bernews this is funny an irony.

        • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Mr. John Barritt further highlights some very key points, “There is a past here that cannot be erased or ignored.”

There are fears, worries even, over the impact opening up will have on jobs, housing, educational opportunities and, yes, politics should it include the right to vote. You remember how this played out in the past.

An open, honest parliamentary review might well assist not just in bringing people in on the issues, but in helping formulate a community consensus on a national immigration plan.

It is this front door rather than back door approach on a critical issue which may prompt people to participate with open but not empty minds.

Some will decry the method as taking too much time.

But the harder issues, the important and the difficult, are worth the investment of time.

Thanks Mr. Barritt you have made some extremely important points in regards to this issue. Those that click no, are not willing to be honest in regards to this matter. IT kills them to accept facts.

          • Black Soil says:

Another Tea Party meeting. Beat the war drums. It’s about political power, its about taking Bermuda back (backwards TBH).

            • Kunta says:

You sound like de Oligarchy back in de day when they saw a group of Blacks gathering !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Facts like how the PLP put the clause in to begin with. If only there were records to show how many and who were granted status because of this clause before the OBA tried to block the applications. The clause was put in with a deliberate intent, and as it was put in be he PLP, it was their intent, they just didn’t want their back door to be known about and they expected to be in power longer, otherwise they would have locked it up sooner.

          • Impact on ... says:

            Betty,

“There are fears, worries even, over the impact opening up will have on jobs, housing, educational opportunities and, yes, politics should it include the right to vote.”

This can’t impact jobs (PRC’s are already employed and the PRC legislation puts them on equal footing with Bermudians in any case). It’s not going to impact housing (PRC’s can already purchase property, with some restrictions – and, even if it were to make a difference that it would be positive – given the number of properties for sale anything that increases the number of potential buyers would be a big plus), and it’s not going to impact educational opportunities (PRC’s children are already here so they’re not going to be displacing Bermudian children.

So that brings us down to the only possible concerns. The first is, who will they vote for? The party that, even today, is dumping on them? Or someone else? And the second is the one that people want to dance around. “They don’t look like us.”

      • Trumped says:

Betty imagine a Bermuda without the very people you are trying to keep out of Bermuda. The very party you support would not have survived and thrived had it not been for and expat? What would the PLP be without Lois Brown Evans? You do realize, she was not born here. There are many others within your own party: past and present members that were not Bermudian by birth. Why did you embrace them, but support a policy that says others have lived, worked and contributed cannot have the same as your friends!

I encourage you to open your eyes and look around. The next time you participate in or watch any road race, triathlon, end to end walk, parade, ask how many of the volunteers or participants are not Bermudian. The next time you go to the hospital and see the volunteers, pink ladies, or the ladies that donate blood, ask how many are not Bermudian. The next time you go by The Barn take a look in and ask how many are not Bermudian. The next time we have a KBB trash clean up or marine clean up take a look around and ask how many of the people picking up our trash are not Bermudian. The next time you open the newspaper and you see that a rest home is being painted by volunteers, take a guess at how many are not Bermudan.

My non-Bermudian friends and co-workers give much more back to this country than you ever will and unlike you they do so with without complaining, and with love and not hate.

        • BETTTY TRUMP says:

@Trumped your summary is filled with lots of inaccurate FACTS. I suggest you get it correct. Here, Mrs. Lois Browne Evans was born in Bermuda, just a start ….. do some historical reading on Bermuda’s history it might help you….

          • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Why now are nonBermuidans believing they are got a sense of “ENTITLEMENT”..REALLY GET REAL.

            • serengeti says:

Mrs Browne Evans was born here but her parents were expats?
These days, that would make her an expat.

              • James Herald says:

serengeti: You are so correct – but the PLP koolaid drinkers are not interested in 100% hard facts such as this. They just want to play on emotion and perpetuate the myth that all people who don’t look like them are the devil in disguise and will rob them of all that they have.

          • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Her parents weren’t though, were they. She didn’t marry a Bermudian, so how then did she get her status?? Similar story for Dr. Gordon, except that he moved here directly, and was not here as a result of his parents. Would you be arguing against PRC’s status if it meant that they wouldn’t have gotten their’s?? If your answer is yes, then that means your believe in the values you are arguing for and reject these individuals as Bermudians and if you say not, then you are a hypocrite and are only arguing for your own personal agenda, and not one that is to the betterment of Bermuda

          • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

OH! bettty you jus got knocked da fu@ out…lol…he went alone on that hand an took all books…that lil suit card u had weren’t big enuff…

    • Sideliner says:

Actually, it was PLP who first granted rights to long-term residents. It was through the PRC legislation that these long-term residents were allowed to reside, work and own property in Bda. UBP refused to address this issue when they were in office.

      • Redman says:

Yes the PLP did address the issue with PRC’s, shamefully the UBP lacked the guts to deal with it.

Having said that the UBP where in a no win situation. By doing nothing they looked weak and cowardly, however we all know that had they enacted the PRC legislation back in say ’96 the PLP would have had people marching in the streets or worse.

The UBP would have been accused of trying to give themselves more voters blah blah blah. Basically just what the PLP are saying and doing now.

      • Cleancut says:

The PLP had no intention of granting anything to the LTR. The PLP were responsible for sending dozens of families home, mostly Portuguese. The people responsible for the PRC were members of the opposition, Trevor Moniz and many support groups including the Bermuda West Indian association. Many people fought for what was right and eventually the PLP had to bit the bullet.

        • JustAskin2 says:

Actually, that is incorrect. It was the UBP who were responsible for sending families, mostly Portuguese, home. That is one of the reasons why they lost the election. Remember?

  2. aceboy says:

“We in the PLP are in favour of comprehensive immigration reform which would begin by putting a halt to any processing of current status applications for PRCs.”

BS. You simply don’t want the people you have tried hard to feel unwelcome to vote. Because they sure as heck won’t vote for the PLP and you guys know it.

Where is athe Dalton Tucker school? What was it called before PLP changed all the names? Is it east end, west end?

Time for PLP to call it what it is: Scared that you’ll lose votes cos you made all these soon to be voters fell REALLY unwelcome.

Kama is a terrible thing huh?

It is they that should be ashamed.

              • BETTTY TRUMP says:

This guy, the great young Mr. Hill is brilliant and can stand and speak on his own two feet, unlike the show girls in the UBPoba party. That seems more like been used… STOP with your nonsense.

So you don’t deny that the PLP is using him. Interesting.

                • Jonah Hill says:

How is Mr. Hill great? He is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the establishment. Spouting tried and tested rhetorical onslaughts that hold little weight and truthfulness. His grammar is poor. And he’s a (wannabe) lawyer. Need I say more? If Mr. Hill was great he’d fight his battles as an independent and win supporters from both sides of the table. Instead he has chosen to merely follow in the footsteps of our other worthless politicians into the abyss that is party politics in Bermuda. If he was a leader he’d lead and not subject himself to being pimped out by the PLP. He is merely a follower with a big mouth and little substance (and some nice suits)… His constant pandering to the PLP base has already alienated a vast majority of potential supporters. And thus he will never be a leader we can all get behind. A leopard, after all, can’t change his spots… Great? Methinks not.

              • Ian says:

                Like Nandy?

                • Jonah Hill says:

When has the OBAubp ever hailed Nandi as anything more than what she is? Hint: they haven’t. She won her seat fair and square and if that irks you then fine, deal with it. But what that has to do with Me. Hill is beyond me. Obfuscate much?

yet another plp attempt to spread LIES and try to be deceitful!

    • Marge says:

People, look at the opposition loud mouths making all sorts of threats… check out their income now…. the only reason they are making off is because the lack of money.
The P.L.P. are only interested in themselves and what they can gain.

      • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Yeah that is why they created the PRC status, sounds like a party all for themselves. REALLY. WHen the current government’s policies seem to benefit those whom are able to afford most things. Profit for only a certain sector of our community.. guess your in OBAubp Denial Syndrome…big time..

  8. Agitation says:

Why isn’t anyone organizing a town hall meeting to dicuss the definition and fair application of Human Rights in Bermuda with emphasis on the prevention of abuse of those for personal, ideological or political gain?

This current situation is just one example of how selective our view points can be and how politically charged as well.

We should be ashamed of ourselves at how we pick and choose our fights over rights and equality.

This is all very politically immature. Please PLP show the country that you are capable of governing on behalf of ALL the people and not just some. The party platform has to evolve to keep up with the times or votes will be lost. Young people all over the world are demanding more enlightended thinking and young Bermudians are no diffferent–we expect mre from our politicians–not the tired warmed over mantra–Listen to us!

Come on Bermuda we are better than this.

    • Double D says:

      Agreed completely.

A political party that refuses to govern for all of their citizens isn’t a political party at all and instead is just a special interest group.

  9. Chris Famous says:

    Wow the hate is great

1 300 persons were at the last meeting. As a matter of fact there was standing room only.

2 The PLP was calling for bi partisan immigration reform long before this PRC issue arose.

    Please stick to the facts

    • Almost Famous says:

      The hate is great?

I agree you and you team’s hatred for foreigners, PRCs, whites, gays, blacks who don’t support the green team is unbridled and unmatched by any other organization or individuals.

The hate os so great is that you and your green team apparently has no qualms about spreading blatant lies and mistruths as a means to to garner support for their views. The most glaring one being the constant accusation that PRcs with status will take away jobs from Bermudians, despite the fact that there is no legislative restriction or work permit requirements for PRC holders to be employed within the island.

If immigration reform is such a pressing topic why was nothing done about it during your team’s 14 year reign Mr. Famous?

106 excluding the panel and moderator.

      PLP made its bed….

CF lost count, thought of a figure and doubled it,subtracted the first figured he remembered, then added 2 zeros.

there was NOT 300 people in that meeting!

      • Harry Buttle says:

They can roll hundreds of people for a simple labour dispute, even to the point of marching on the HOA yet a “town hall” meeting could get more than 110 people? I think that less people care about this issue than the opposition are letting on.

What we are experiencing is the democratic process and we should be glad we live in a society where it exists. We should be glad we are able to speak up and oppose stuff put forward by Government.

During the PLP era, people who spoke up and opposed them were frequently intimidated and branded as racists simply for their point of view. A very unfair practice which forced many people into silence. Not a very healthy situation at all.

We should all be glad that era is gone, which ever party we support.

I hope this will open the eyes of many people so that they also may see the realities surrounding us, (all) here on the Island of Bermuda. The P.L.P are “cutting their nose off to spite their face” and that my friend is the bottom-line! Sad yes…but true :-(

waste of time….they had my support for 7 of 14 yrs. and could have created opportunities for ownership of key business that control the economy………how many supermarkets, wholesale distributers, importers, shipping lines, alternative energy suppliers, Electric Vehicle dealerships were created in 14 yrs? They even road blocked their own from moving forward. Sad how opportunity was squandered by crab in the barrel mentality. Ownership vs. employment…..tell me which is better.

  15. Anon says:

Sorry everyone but I am going to use this forum to, hopefully!, clarify some of the complete nonsense that being said by politician about the recent changes to pensions:

Previously, the Government employee pension funds (not the regular social insurance fund that every employee both Gov. and non Gov. pays into) had to be topped up (additional cash added) each year for any increases to the cost of living index. This recent change means that the Minister now has the authority to suspend these annual payments in the event the country has no $. That’s it.

This is strictly a funding issue and will NOT affect what pensioners (both former Gov. employees and non Gov. employees) will receive each month.

However, the bigger issue is that the country’s pension funds (Gov. and non Gov. employee funds)are currently underfunded (not enough cash) by almost $2B which means that unless further adjustments are made to both the Gov. and non Gov. employee pension plans, if you’re somewhere in your 40′s, there will be NO money left to pay you any pension.

So all this “granny’s pension just got cut this month” in nothing more that scaremongering by the politicians to garner votes. The facts are: 1) if changes aren’t made to Bermuda’s pension plans (changing the retirement age, reducing the benefit payments, changing to defined contribution)the will be NO money left for anyone currently mid-40s or younger and 2) the funding issue was made worse when the funding on the pension plans were suspended for a year by the PLP

This issue is a problem for all of us and is a much much bigger problem than we realize or than any politicians want to acknowledge publically or risk scary off their voters.

You all have a responsibility to both yourself and future generations of Bermudians to make sure that this information is shared with everyone.

  16. Raymond Ray says:

I’d heard Bill Maher say this on his TV show the other night; it was in reference to one being in search of “power”.
“It’s like workplace sex, it feels good at the time but, it will come to haunt you in the near future”.

    • Evie says:

  17. Alvin Williams says:

The PLP and it’s supporters have been accuse of creating hate? But I say it’s the hate that hate produce. This immigration issue would not be an issue if the former PLP government had not attempted to solve it and has gotten very little credit for it.
The Herd mentality malign our people;insult out leaders; read these blogs any day and see who is spewing hate; who is stoking the pot and then they have the nerve to turn around and express shock at the storm they have created and the whirl wind they will surely reap. We will mobilize our people from our Seniors to our youth; we will liberate our country.

    • Rick Rock says:

Another threat Alvin? Thug rule is it?

By the way, we can ‘mobilise our people’ and ‘liberate our country’ as well.

    • James Herald says:

The people who spewed hate were the PLP who constantly accused people who criticized them as racists. The PLP drew on their success by dividing the country and fanning the flames of racism. Thankfully they will not fool us again. PLP is finished.

Lastly, I hope that the PLP holds a 3rd meeting in the east end for I would like to attend.

      • Raymond Ray says:

I must comment here, e.g. speaking of the P.L.P. spewed / spewing more hate :-(
The Progressive Labour Party have left a foul taste in many peoples mouths! They are somewhat like an infected wound that will take “treatment” or a medicine to heal it.

    • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Well said Mr. Williams, as few if any PLP supporters write on the blogs, more so read it. Only when an issue they deem gets a lot of public exposure they might pick up and read it. CLicks are higher from the UBPoba supporters and team of bloggers.

The nasty and distasteful comments come from the OBAubp team of bloggers. Same ones daily, spewing out such nasty comments. All for what…. to protect the wrong actions of their government. Rather than holding them responsible and accountable. I thought we were all for Transparency and Accountability. But this seems to be merely a falsehood by the UBPoba fan base and MPs.

What is so disappointing is that I thought we wanted to move towards a high level of Accountability and Transparency. But seems the UBPoba is only happy doing that if it refers to the PLP only, and not the UBPoba….

      • Anon says:

Betty …so why are you wasting you time here then?

      • JustAskin2 says:

Agreed. And beneath the OBA’s distasteful remarks lies a lot of racial hatred. They are not fooling anyone.

        • Trumped says:

Betty…lots of in accurate facts really. Perhaps Lois was born here, but neither or her parents were (St. Kitts & Nevis) and neither was her husband (Trinidad). Is that a FACT, yes? That would make her the child of two parents that fit the profile of the same PRC holders today you would want thrown out of Bermuda. FACT? Yes!

I said others within your party past and present were not born Bermudians? Are you saying that this is not true? Not one person in the PLP is / was non-Bermudian by birth? Certainly this can’t be true. Even if it was, the PLP certainly don’t mind taking money from non-Bermudians. See a quote from http://www.PLP.bm on how the PLP came to aquire Alaska Hall.

In 1967, the PLP moved to its current National Headquarters in Alaska Hall on Court Street in Hamilton. This move was made possible by a generous donation to the Party from member Mr. George Haaslacher, an American who supported the Party when he worked in Bermuda. When Mr. Haaslacher left Bermuda he turned over his shares in the Kirkland Company Limited (the forerunner of the Bermuda National Bank).

So Betty, what are the LOTS of other inaccuracies you mentioned. Like always I’m sure you won’t respond to questions, you never do.
