Photo Set #3: Around The Island Powerboat Race

August 18, 2014

Crowds of onlookers lined the shorelines on Sunday afternoon [Aug 17] as the 2014 Around the Island Powerboat Race got underway, with sponsor Rubis putting up a $10,000 purse for the event.

Sunday’s choppy waters gave spectators a wild show as the powerboats made their way around the island’s coastline. Some boats were unable to battle the conditions while others incurred some damage from the heavy pounding.

Reports indicate that one boat sank in the area of Warwick while another driver had to beach his craft in the east end because of a hole in the hull. Michael Henderson and Matthew Renaud turned heads as they piloted their 41 year old 14′ Bristol hull around the island in a time of 1.44.37.

The event’s A Class was topped by Chris Warboys and Steve Sherwin in A30 with a time of 1.28.18, while David Selley and Jordan Fletcher in B8 won the B Class and took line honours in a time of 57.23.
