Fumes Emitting Onboard Air Canada Flight

September 13, 2014

[Updated with video. Officials confirm the flight had fumes emitting throughout the plane, people onboard complained of sore throat, headaches and irritation of the eyes, and three people were taken to the Urgent Care Center for treatment via ambulance.]

Emergency personnel were on hand at LF Wade International Airport as Air Canada 942 from Toronto arrived on the island just before noon today [Sept 13].

The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service, Police Service and ambulance were all on scene, having been called in after what we unofficially understand to possibly be reports of smoke and/or fumes in the plane’s cabin.

The Airbus A319 landed safely, and was taken to the finger where it appeared to be getting assessed. Further details are limited at this time, however we will update with additional information as able.

Update 3.16pm: Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service [BFRS] Staff Officer, Sergeant Russann Francis said that, “At 11:30 am this morning, 911 Emergency Dispatch Center received a call from the Airport Duty Officer [ADO] at L. F. Wade International Airport. The ADO reported the incoming Airbus A319 Air Canada flight will make an emergency landing due to fumes emitting throughout the plane.”

“The flight was reported to carry 88 souls on board with several passengers and crew members complaining of sore throat, headaches and irritation of the eyes.

“BFRS were standing by on scene with 9 vehicles and 15 personnel as the flight landed safely in Bermuda at 11:48 am. The BFRS personnel assessed the passengers and carried out a thorough search of the Airbus. Subsequently, three persons were taken to the Urgent Care Center for treatment via ambulance.”

  1. Raymond Ray says:

All we can do now is pray everyone pulls through. It’s been far too often lately that we’ve been experiencing these “mishaps” aboard various flights, either en-route to the island or elsewhere. Can some of these “mishaps” be due to negligence?
Many times we witness planes turn around and take off after only been given a quick look-over:-(

  2. Family Man says:

First time I’ve heard it reported that the Urgent Care Centre has been used. Was anybody there to meet them?

    • marge says:

Urgent care center !!!! is that also called the Lamb Fogoo health service ?

      • Coffee says:

Dr.Brown had it built for times such as this ! However , the perfect government we now have will shut it down .

        • Creamy says:

And the ambulance would have taken them to KEMH fir their non-life-threatening first aid. BFD.

So when do we call passengers” souls on board a plane”

    • Kay-Ann DeShiekds says:

In aviation persons on a flight are counted as souls on board. This is inclusive of passengers and crew.

@ Marge , you’ve obviously never worked for the airlines .
Tons of terms, phrases and abbreviations ‘civilians’ have never heard of before. A language unto itself that comes with the profession .

@ Marge. Forever. It includes passengers and crew. Get out your dictionary, smile.

      • Family Man says:

But what if there was an atheist on board? Would it be 87 souls and one other?

        • Common Cents says:

The atheist still has a soul, even though he/she doesn’t know it. :)

    • Creamy says:

On airplanes and ships people are referred to as souls. You need to read a book once in a while.

    • OBSERVER says:

Hey Marge, if you are that concerned about why a person on a flight is called “soul” why not call someone at the control tower, they will be able to explain all to you.

  5. Terry says:

    Marge et al.

Your new to the real world.
Keep to the net and you will still be.
    Shalom.

  6. Concerned about the wrong thing says:

Souls is used internationally and is used to describe the number of people onboard. It’s not bernews, its the FAA. Read a book for goodness sake.

  7. They did not close the causeway. I think that they be learning.

  8. This sort of thing is increasing in frequency…is this a new smugglin technique…is this per chance happening world wide?

  9. You say what you want the odds of this are too high.

  10. NIgel says:

This is what we call a fume event and it is most likely due to an engine oil seal failure in the compressor stage of the engine. The high temperature air vaporizes the oil which enters the cabin in the cabin pressure air. Unfortunately, turbine engine oil is highly toxic and causes neurological damage.
