America’s Cup Team Moving Into Grand Atlantic

March 27, 2015

Team Oracle — which is due to be housed in the Dockyard area which is presently under construction — will move into the Grand Atlantic development starting in April for approximately three months, the Government announced today [Mar 27].

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Housing Corporation [BHC], in conjunction with the Bermudiana Beach development team, announced today that they have collectively agreed to assist Team Oracle as they transition to Bermuda for the impending America’s Cup sailing event.

“Team Oracle is due to be housed in the Dockyard area which is presently under construction and not move in ready. As a short term measure, the BHC and the Bermudiana Beach resort will reserve a single block of units for the temporary assistance of the advance team for the Oracle Group,” stated Major Barrett Dill of the BHC.

“Team Oracle is expected to reside at Grand Atlantic starting in April for approximately three  months and then transfer to their Dockyard location once their units are completed.

“While this may slow the anticipated building process at the South Shore site, the BHC and the Bermudiana Beach resort feel the America’s Cup is very important to the future economic prosperity of Bermuda and wish to play their part in the success of the venture.

“The sectioned off area will be at the Eastern end of the property while construction work will begin from the western side of the site once final negotiations have concluded.”

  1. sebring says:

so much for helping the rental market.

    • Raw Onion says:

Another person that cant read nor decipher what is being said here. The Team is to be housed at Dockyard which is not ready. There are other groups that will likely want to rent homes for an extended period.

      • sebring says:

well thank the ubp for the education most of us got!!!I yeah I voted for the oba!

      • What went wrong says:

If “dockyard” is not ready – then its not helping the rental market. What are they doing, building new places for them to rent.

I swear the OBA defenders on this website need to read what they write sometimes.

        • Creamy says:

Um, they are renting the $42m waste of money built for no purpose using borrowed money by the
          PLP.
Most sane people find it hard to see what there is to complain about.

          • sebring says:

if I am not mistaken the government no longer will get the income from this disaster but the Bermudiana company will.

          • cottereaux says:

I did not see the word “rent” used anywhere in the story.

“agreed to assist” & “temporary assistance” were used.

those read “rent free” to me.

        • cottereaux says:

most likely the new facility will have some sleeping quarters for the team. they will be working long hours and need a place to crash for a few hours, then back to work. then someone will be there for security, and sleep there.

      • LMAO says:

I can read and understand what I read. I read that OBA said it was going to fall into the sea. I can read that Stewart Hayward aligned himself with the OBA. I can read that someone is smiling all the way to the bank ’cause they got a sweet $9 million deal. Yeal buddy, I can read.

        • Come Correct says:

Show us where the oba said that then. You can’t, it didn’t happen.

        • Raymond Ray says:

@ LMAO: Correction. I also can read and did read that someones party,(Progressive Labour Party)is still smiling all the way to the bank ’cause they got a sweet $42 million…Yeah buddy we all can/had read.
          :-( Sad yes but true.

  2. Coffee says:

Any idea of the value in dollars and cents , Bernews , how much rent will Bermuda earn ?

    • Huh says:

Enough to buy a good cup of Coffee….

    • Creamy says:

More than it earned in rent since it was built.

    • cottereaux says:

the word rent is not used anywhere in the story. best guess from those units is zero dollars.

  3. Chris Famous says:

According to an OBA senator these units were unsafe and due to fall in the sea.

Now they are safe enough for billionaires highly paid sailing crews?

    Go figure

    • Sickofantz says:

They are not going to be in them very long Chris.

    • Creamy says:

      What
OBA senator, Chris? Another lie you people like to peddle?

    • Raymond Ray says:

@ Chris Famous: What would make you think they’re staying up on the cliffs? Mind you they could be, but really I doubt they’ll be; especially with them having to shore-up the cliff/s etc.

    • Edmund Wells says:

Why does the idea that the Grand Atlantic failure belongs to anybody except the prior Government still have legs?

      EW

OBA: “PLP Blaming Anyone But Themselves”, 12 Mar 2012

“In response an OBA spokesperson said, “Shadow Works Minister Michael Weeks is skating on very thin ice when he accuses the One Bermuda Alliance of being responsible for the failure of the Grand Atlantic housing development.

“His statement is just one more example of his party blaming anyone but themselves for failures that they should simply own up to.

“We challenge Mr. Weeks to provide the public with examples of OBA ‘scaremongering’. The OBA issued at least two statements on the Grand Atlantic housing project in 2012, both of which focused on the high cost of the so-called affordable housing project.”

    • hmmm says:

      Chris that is a lie.

    • Ian says:

Wasn’t just them, it was the OBA mouthpieces here chirping up about the Grand Atlantic Ocean tumble. Now as everyone expects they fully back the OBA decision to put billionaires “at risk”. Bunch of delusional jokers…

      • Edmund Wells says:

        Ian-

        OBA mouthpieces?

So, beyond the unproven assertion that people are paid to post here, you further assert that comments here are not the point of view of individuals, but Party statements? That the Party is responsible for, and should own these statements?

        Who’s the delusional joker, Ian?

        EW

        • Jus Wonderin' says:

Ian is….he drinks the free green aid all day long!

    • Strike fund says:

According to a PLP minister there was 100 buyers lined up.

    • iabingi says:

Let’s wait and see if the units fall into the sea….until then??

    • Drink Water says:

A Question for Chris Famous: Why didn’t you, any member of your family, your friends, co-workers, or even one single PLP member rush out and by them. They were a great deal, with great views after all!

Answer: With the cliffs exposed, not reinforced and without a breakwater there would likely be LONG term erosion which could affect the structural integrity of these homes. Nobody said they would slide into the ocean tomorrow. However, in 25 years, and after likely battering’s from hurricanes would you feel safe?

Chris, I believe you are an engineer and well respected. If you didn’t see some truth in the statements being made then why is it that not one single PLP member buy one.

      • Gravy train says:

Why would anyone close to the PLP hierarchy need affordable housing after over a decade on the gravy train?

    • Onion says:

That is a flat out lie. They never said that.

  4. Observer says:

Hope they wear their life jackets to bed. Hate to wake up a wee bit wet!

    • sebring says:

at least they all should know how to swim!!!

  5. Terry says:

    Oh let it go Chris.
For Gods sake get a life.
    Always so negative.

    • Ian says:

Kinda like you hypocrites when your looking to blame the worlds woes on the PLP

      • Christopher Notoriouss says:

Almost the end of the month Ian. Time to collect your cheque from PLP for posting daily rubbish.

    • Yahoo says:

      He has no life.

  6. ray masters says:

Exactly while oba where saying the buildings are unsafe on the campaign trail…by gully its a miracle the units are safe enough for the americas cup now. Are they not afraid for the teams safety as previously stated for public safety before they where elected.

    • hmmm says:

They never said that, you are making thing up !! Huh?

    • jt says:

Which OBA members and what did they say?
I think you are mistaken but am open to being proved wrong.

  7. Huh says:

They’ll be safe for 3 months. If only the STUPID PLP had listened to ALL the sensible people telling them that there was NO NEED TO WASTE $42 MILLION building them, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion…

    • Ian says:

There you go folks. PLPs fault again! Lol

      • Creamy says:

Because it was such a great idea to build it.
The $42m plus interest would come in pretty handy right now, wouldn’t it.
It could pay for public employee sick days for several years, for example.

      • iabingi says:

        Ray Charles could see that.

      • Christopher Notoriouss says:

Oh to be a paid blogger like you Ian. Paid to write lies and BS.

    • sage says:

Then they would be going ’round Harbor Lights for three months.

  8. Common Sense says:

Chris Famous. The Grand Atlantic is likely to be unsafe in the long term; but will be safe in the short term. Hopefully no hurricanes in the next 3 months. If you are given lemons you should make the best lemonade while you can.

  9. flikel says:

I get a little tired of the back peddling by many of the OBA supporters regarding the safety of these units.

Although there was no OBA official party press release stating these units were unsafe and have a good possibly of falling into the ocean due to cliff erosion, I certainly heard this view expressed by current OBA MPs and those trying to become OBA MPs when campaigning.

So, it is disingenuous to state the OBA ‘never’ proclaimed this development to be unsafe and challenge people to ‘prove’ the OBA said this.

Of course we cannot ‘prove’ the OBA said this as there was no official party press release, however we certainly heard this view expressed repeatedly during the run-up to the last general election.

    • Creamy says:

The problem is that there was no “OBA official party release saying these units were unsafe”.
You, and no one else, can produce such an “official party release” because it never existed.
It never happened. It is another PLP myth.

    • Toughchit says:

I get tired of PLP mouthpieces making accusations without the ability to prove one bit of it.

Provide one article from the OBA that said these things will fall in the ocean in the near future.

      Just one.

The only articles regarding this issue notes the annual erosion and the fact that this will affect these places in a decade or so depending on weather.

During the most recent hurricanes more of the cliff face fell off.

Why did the BHC board resign when overruled by PLP politicians regarding this project? The board unanimously voted no, but as usual PLP politicians thought they were the smartest people I’m the room.

On top of that the new development includes further reinforcement of the cliff face.

Why can’t you PLP mouthpieces just admit one fault of your beloved Party? And this was a big screw up that will cost us for years to co,e despite the fact that Dr. Brown emphatically stated that this development would be at no cost to the taxpayer.

  10. tom says:

Last time I checked, they are building, buildings for there boats not housing for the crews… as most of em make 25K a month plus …. go figure…

  12. blow in says:

why not use FRODINGHAM PILES to ensure the cliff face of this expensive complex is safe and secure, instead of nit picking , FIX IT YOU DUMMIES

  13. LMAO says:

They stood up to two blows. Hurricane Fayhee, but Bermuda won’t be able to after he blows us out of our country

  14. somuchless says:

These are the right people to stay at the grand Atlantic. When the units fall in the water these guys will be okay with it since they’re use to falling in the water. Lol

  15. Rasta says:

The PLP built that ugly eyesore and now the OBA have to correct their incompetence. Oh yeah, Zane will pay 10 million for it , not withstanding his incompetent party put us taxpayers on the hook for 42 million $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

  16. Popps says:

Who cares this is Bermuda were if you cant fix it oh lets buy a new one. There is no common sense here. So lets just sit back and watch people frick there country up.

  18. Glass Half Full says:

What should have been comments welcoming new people in Bermuda turned out to be a political mudslinging fest, let’s see this for the benefit to the island instead of pointing fingers everywhere.

    • average bermudian says:

I have been told time and time again by ex-pat workers from various countries that they have never seen a home government put or treat their own citizens second. (While ensuring that these outsiders are comfortable) We see it with these so-called immigration policy changes, employment opportunities, housing etc etc.

Where are the 2,000 jobs – I, like many other bermudians are still seeking work while our borders are being opened to who ever. It makes no sense and will lead to fighting (right now we are all only arguing amongst ourselves)

Fools (Dam Fools) leading this country who don’t have a clue

  19. Dude says:

Those units were so cheaply built. My guess if they cost $5mil. But the Bermudian people were handed a bill for $42mil and some dumb*** in the PLP govt paid it! somebody should be looking into invoices. THAT’s what i’m more interested in getting to the bottom of.

  20. rhonda says:

When it is bliss, its folly to be wise. Oba has well paid pundits. Plp ought to take note.

    • Creamy says:

Who exactly is “werll paid”, rhonda?
I wonder if that is a libellous allegation? It would be interesting to find out.

  21. bluebird says:

Ritz Carlton the hotel chain whos customers dont ask the PRICE,wanted to build on that location, hope you remember ?? They got so much NEGATIVITY that they QUIETLY went away and later sold the property at a profit.
Have you noticed that NO hotel chain will build anything in Bermuda and Ritz Carlton builds a NEW HOTEL every other year and you can usually find there hotel in the Top ten list each year.

  22. Rasta says:

OBA trying to make lemonade out of a lemon. Not easy.
