St. Vincent Defeat Bermuda Basketball Team

June 21, 2015

Despite coming back from 19 down to take a 1 point lead, the Bermuda Basketball Team narrowly lost to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, falling 74-73.

The match report said, “Once again, the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships have proven that no second-half lead is safe, as Bermuda came back from 19 down to take a one-point lead over St. Vincent and the Grenadines with less than a minute left in the game–only to fall victim to a Shawn King putback to give SVG a 74-73 win in the first CBC reclassification round game at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola.

“SVG took control of the game after Bermuda finished the first quarter up 19-16. SVG led 36-27 at half, outscoring Bermuda 20-8 in the second.

“SVG built a 52-33 lead on a bucket by Dameon Ottley with 3:16 to play in the third. But Bermuda cut the lead to 14 at 56-42 by the end of the period, and rode that momentum into the fourth quarter.

“Christopher Crumpler took over for Bermuda, as his three-pointer with 1:12 to play got his team to within one at 69-68. A Sean Baptiste three-pointer gave SVG a temporary four-point lead before Crumpler hit a pair of free throws and another three to give Bermuda a 73-72 lead with :37.5 to play.

“But then, with :13.0 remaining, Shawn King connected on a tip-in to give his team the winning basket.

“Alexis Foyle led SVG with 23 points, King had 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Baptiste notched 15. Crumpler scored 23 for Bermuda, while Steven Simons and Yusef Riley each scored in double figures.

“SVG will play in the 5th Place Game tomorrow against the winner of the Barbados-Suriname match.”
