Photos & Videos: BTUC March/Outside Court

May 1, 2017

Today is International Workers Day, and the Bermuda Trade Union Congress [BTUC] held a Solidarity March this afternoon [May 1], with crowds of people coming out, most wearing red as the organisers had requested.

The BTUC previously said, “Annually, May 1st is recognized around the world as ‘May Day’ or ‘International Workers Day’. The day is typically marked by international celebrations, focusing on the contribution of workers and workers’ organizations to the socioeconomic success of their communities.”

“It is well documented that the rights and benefits won through the efforts of labour organizations readily transfer throughout the community. Because of these efforts, we are pleased to contribute to fair employment practices and a better quality of life for all in Bermuda.”

The day began with some people gathering outside of Magistrates Court this morning to show support for the people appearing at the Monthly Arraignments Session after being charged in connection with alleged offences at the protest on December 2, 2016.

The Solidarity March was scheduled to begin at 12 noon from Victoria Park, however some people who had Court appearances in the morning were still in the Court building at that time, so people marched from Victoria Park to the Court. They gathered there for some time, at one point chanting “Let Them Out”, before beginning their march though Hamilton.

Those in attendance included BPSU President Jason Hayward, BPSU General Secretary Ed Ball, BIU General Secretary Molly Burgess, BUT General Secretary Michael Charles, former BIU Leader Ottiwell Simmons, former Cabinet Minister Lt/Col David Burch, former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith, former Opposition Leader Kim Swan, Opposition Leader David Burt, PLP Deputy Leader Walter Roban, PLP MPs Derrick Burgess, Wayne Furbert, Zane DeSilva, Diallo Rabain, Kim Wilson, Rolfe Commissiong, and Neville Tyrell, as well as numerous others.
